2 लाख answer sheets, एक रात

आपका cousin एक government entrance exam देकर लौटता है, हाथ में उसकी pink OMR sheet की copy पकड़े हुए, और परेशान है: "यार, 2 लाख students ने exam दिया। result date से पहले ये सब check कौन करेगा?"

सच बात ये है कि कोई इंसान check करेगा ही नहीं। ये काम machines करेंगी, वो भी हज़ारों sheets per hour की speed से, बिना एक भी आँख थके।

जो machines की पूरी family light की मदद से paper को data में बदल देती है, वही optical scanner family है। और इसके 3 specialists (OMR, OCR, MICR) exam में तो पक्का पूछे ही जाते हैं।

एक torch और एक light meter

मान लीजिए आप एक torch और एक light meter लेकर एक अंधेरे room में जाते हैं जहाँ एक printed page रखा है। अब torch को paper पर घुमाइए: जहाँ white area है वहाँ बहुत सारी light वापस bounce होगी, और जहाँ ink लगी है वहाँ light गायब हो जाएगी। अब हर point पर meter की reading note कर लीजिए, बस, आपने पूरा page दोबारा बना लिया, वो भी numbers के रूप में। यही torch और meter वाला sweep, बहुत छोटा और automatic बना दिया जाए, तो वही तो optical scanner है।

Scanner की formal definition

एक optical scanner paper documents को digital images में convert करता है:

  • एक light source page को strip by strip रोशन करता है;
  • sensors हर point पर reflected light को measure करते हैं;
  • हर point एक number बन जाता है: bright = high, dark = low;
  • और इन numbers का पूरा grid ही image है, जो उसी binary में store होती है जो आप जानते हैं।

Image कितनी sharp होगी ये resolution in DPI (dots per inch) से तय होता है: per inch जितने ज़्यादा dots, उतनी fine detail, और file उतनी बड़ी। Common types 2 हैं: flatbed (glass bed और lid वाला) और handheld wand scanners।

MICR

Cheque की code line एक special magnetic ink से print होती है, और उसे MICR पढ़ता है। ये इसलिए चुनी जाती है क्योंकि magnetic reading stamps, folds और ऊपर से कुछ लिख देने के बावजूद भी survive कर जाती है, जबकि एक pure optical reader तो वहाँ धोखा खा जाता। OMR bubbles पढ़ता है, OCR normal printed text पढ़ता है। इन तीनों के one-line काम (marks, characters, cheques) classic one-mark questions हैं।

OMR sheet पर आप pencil से bubble C को darken करते हैं। torch-and-light-meter वाली picture use करके बताइए: machine को कैसे पता चलता है कि आपने C चुना है, और instructions में हमेशा क्यों ज़ोर देते हैं कि bubble को PURA भरो?

Scanner हर bubble की fixed position पर reflection measure करता है: खाली bubble light वापस bounce करता है, और आपका pencil से भरा bubble उसे absorb कर लेता है। तो position C पर low reflection = answer C। अब आधा भरा या हल्का bubble बहुत ज़्यादा light reflect करता है और blank पढ़ा जा सकता है, इसीलिए वो "पूरा भरो" वाला rule होता है, और इसीलिए वो हर OMR instruction box में लिखा रहता है।

जहाँ marks कट जाते हैं

OMR और OCR को आपस में उलझा देना: OMR known positions पर marks detect करता है (bubbles), जबकि OCR page पर कहीं भी characters के shapes को पहचानता है, जो कि बहुत मुश्किल काम है। MICR को fully optical कह देना: उसका M तो Magnetic ink है, यही तो उसकी पूरी खूबी है। और याद रखिए scanner एक input device है: ये data अंदर लाता है, students कभी-कभी गलती से इसे output में डाल देते हैं।

OMR आपके entrance exams check करता है; OCR हर PDF-to-text tool, DigiLocker के document scan और Google Lens translate के अंदर बैठा है; और MICR हर उस cheque के नीचे होता है जो आप कभी sign करेंगे। अगले lesson का barcode reader भी यही reflection वाला trick है, बस अब bubbles के बजाय stripes पर, देखिएगा idea कैसे repeat होता है।
