Bare Machine का दुःस्वप्न

कल्पना कीजिए आप अपने college computer lab में बैठे हैं, एक ऐसे computer को घूरते हुए जिसमें बिल्कुल कोई software installed नहीं: बस silicon chips, circuits, और wires। आप 'Hello World' print करने के लिए एक सरल program लिखना चाहते हैं। एक operating system के बिना, आप बस code type करके run नहीं कर सकते। आपको keyboard circuits control करने के लिए binary instructions ख़ुद लिखनी होंगी, उन्हें toggle switches से ख़ास RAM addresses में load करना होगा, और printer pin के लिए बिल्कुल सही motor movements code करने होंगे। अगर एक और student उसी वक़्त print करना चाहे, आपका data टकराता और भ्रष्ट हो जाता है।

एक computer को दो बुनियादी वजहों से एक Operating System चाहिए: यह एक Extended Machine (या abstraction layer) और एक Resource Manager के रूप में काम करता है।

एक extended machine के रूप में, यह hardware circuits के भद्दे, जटिल विवरण छुपाता है और एक साफ़, user friendly interface देता है। एक resource manager के रूप में, यह नियंत्रित करता है कि CPU, memory, files, और input output devices को कई users और programs के बीच बिना टकराव के कैसे साझा किया जाए।
