Theory
The last time you get to choose
Riya stands at the same Surat notice board she read in Semester 3, and the 2 lists are back: skill courses the college will run, and approved online courses she could finish from her hostel room.
Her instruction is the familiar one line: pick one, worth 2 credits.
This is BCA406, her FOURTH and last Skill Enhancement Course. She has done this dance before (BCA306 in Sem 3), so the rule is old news. What is new is a small, useful upgrade to how the online route's credits are stored: and this page covers both.
Theory
Same menu, one new counter
SEC is still served as a menu, not a set meal: the university approves a basket, your institute publishes the list, and you order what fits your goals.
The one new counter this time: when you finish a recognised MOOC, its credits can be deposited into your ABC account (Academic Bank of Credits) and transferred to your degree, like credits landing in a bank you own. Same choice as before; a tidier way to bank the online route's credits.
Theory
The rule, plainly
For BCA406 you select one 2-credit Skill Enhancement Course from either:
- the University-approved skill-based course basket (courses your institute runs or recognises), or
- a recognised MOOC or online course (a course on a platform like SWAYAM, NPTEL or Coursera that appears on the approved list).
The word doing the work is still approved / recognised. Baskets differ between institutes and change between years, so confirm the current list with your institute before you enrol. A random certificate you find online does not count.
Theory
The new piece: credit transfer via ABC
The Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) is a national digital store of academic credits, part of the NEP framework. When you complete a recognised MOOC, the credits can be deposited into your personal ABC account and then transferred and accumulated toward your degree.
Why it helps: your credits live in one account you control, portable across institutions, so an online course's credits are recorded properly rather than lost on a printed certificate.
One honest caution: the exact ABC process (creating your account, how your institute maps deposited credits to BCA406) is institute-specific. Treat ABC as the mechanism, and confirm the precise steps with your institute.
At a glance
Three roads into the same 2 credits. Each must be on your institute's approved list; the MOOC route can bank its credits via ABC.
| Route | What it looks like | Suits you when |
|---|---|---|
| Basket course | A skill course your institute runs or recognises, often with scheduled sessions | You want structure, campus contact and local guidance |
| Recognised MOOC (via ABC) | An approved online course; credits deposited to your ABC account | You want flexibility, or a topic the campus list lacks |
| Internship route | Field or internship training in place of a certificate course (next topic) | You have access to genuine workplace training |
Quiz
Which statement about BCA406 is correct?
- Any online course counts as long as you get a certificate
- You pick one 2-credit approved course (basket or recognised MOOC), and MOOC credits can transfer via your ABC account
- ABC replaces the need for the course to be approved
- The 2 credits are granted automatically once you register
Show the answer
You pick one 2-credit approved course (basket or recognised MOOC), and MOOC credits can transfer via your ABC account
You choose one 2-credit APPROVED course; the recognised-MOOC route can bank its credits through ABC. Option A ignores the approval requirement (an unapproved certificate earns 0 credits). Option C misunderstands ABC: it is a way to STORE and transfer earned credits, not a substitute for approval; the course must still be recognised. Option D is false: credits come only on successful completion, never on registration. ABC changes how credits are recorded, not whether the course qualifies.
Think first
Help Jay finish strong
Jay is heading into his final year and wants his last SEC to strengthen his placement chances. The basket offers a Tally with GST workshop; the approved MOOC list has an intermediate SQL-for-analytics course he could bank via ABC. Which fits, and what must he confirm first? Then tap.
Show the answer
Lean towards the SQL-for-analytics MOOC: it compounds his earlier database and Python work (BCA303) right before his final-year project and placements, and banking it via ABC records the credit cleanly. But confirm 2 things FIRST: (1) that the exact course is on the approved list and its completion window fits the semester, and (2) the precise ABC process at his institute (account, how the credit is mapped to BCA406). If either is unclear, Tally with GST is a strong Gujarat-market fallback. The only wrong move is enrolling in something unapproved or leaving ABC steps to the last day.
Watch out
The unapproved-course trap (still true)
Every year a student finishes a long online course, prints the certificate, and learns it earns 0 credits because it was never on the approved list. Approval comes before enrolment. And do not assume ABC works itself: set up your account and confirm the deposit process early, so your hard-earned credits actually land where they belong. Keep every certificate and receipt.
Theory
Where this final choice pays off
This is the last SEC line you get to write on your resume before you graduate, so aim it at where you are going: a data or SQL course sharpens final-year project and placement work; an accounts tool opens local job doors. The remaining topics cover the internship alternative, what SEC aims at, how these courses are delivered, and how the 2 credits are marked, exactly as in BCA306.
Summary
Key takeaways
- BCA406 (SEC-04) = one 2-credit skill course you choose yourself, your fourth and final SEC.
- Two routes: the University-approved skill basket, or a recognised MOOC/online course.
- Recognised MOOC credits can be deposited and transferred via your ABC (Academic Bank of Credits) account.
- ABC stores and transfers earned credits; it does NOT replace the approval requirement.
- Confirm the current approved list AND the exact ABC process with your institute before enrolling.
- Keep enrolment proof and certificates; credits come only on successful completion.
- Memory hook: menu not set meal, only approved dishes count, and bank the MOOC credits in your ABC.
