Theory

The biggest single deliverable

Of the four things your internship is graded on, the final internship report carries the most weight of any single deliverable: 30%, nearly a third of your whole grade. It is worth taking seriously.

You met the report's structure in unit 3, the front matter, internship details, work done, learning outcomes, challenges and solutions, weekly summary, conclusion, and references. This lesson looks at it as the graded deliverable it is: what the marks reward, and how to earn a strong share of this 30%. A complete, honest, well-written report, built on the records you kept, is very achievable, and richly rewarded.

Theory

What the 30% rewards

The report marks reward several things together. Completeness: all the template sections present, with the required front matter (certificate, declaration, and photographs). Quality of content: a clear description of the work you did, genuine learning outcomes, and an honest account of challenges and how you solved them. Writing quality: clear, organized, correct, and readable. And honesty: a truthful account of real work.

A report that is complete, substantive, and well-written shows you understood and can reflect on your internship, which is what this component measures. Padding, vagueness, missing sections, or careless writing all cost marks. Aim for a report that genuinely tells the story of what you did and learned.

Theory

How to earn a strong report grade

Follow the template fully, do not skip sections. Build the weekly summary straight from your logbook (another reason the logbook habit pays off). Write the description of work done concretely: real tasks, real tools, real outcomes. Make the learning outcomes genuine, and be honest about challenges and how you solved them, that reflection is impressive, not a weakness.

Then write it well: clear, organized, and proofread (spelling and grammar matter). Include the required certificate, declaration, and photographs, and present it neatly. Start early and draft in stages rather than cramming at the end. A report built honestly on your kept records, and polished with care, earns a strong 30%. Confirm exact criteria with your faculty mentor.

Quiz

The final internship report is worth 30%. Which report earns strong marks for this component?

  1. A one-page report with no certificate, declaration, or photographs
  2. A report that invents impressive-sounding work that never happened
  3. A vague report that skips several template sections
  4. A complete report following the template, with a clear honest account of real work, genuine learning, and challenges, written and presented well
Show the answer

A complete report following the template, with a clear honest account of real work, genuine learning, and challenges, written and presented well

The report marks reward completeness (all template sections plus certificate, declaration, and photographs), quality and honesty of content (clear real work, genuine learning outcomes, honest challenges and solutions), and good writing and presentation, so the complete, honest, well-written report earns strong marks. Option A fails on completeness: a one-page report missing the required front matter is incomplete. Option B fails on honesty and integrity: fabricated work is dishonest, is contradicted by your logbook and viva, and undermines the whole assessment. Option C fails on completeness and quality: skipping sections and staying vague loses marks. Follow the template, tell the true story of your work well, and this 30% is strongly earned.

Think first

Why is the report worth so much (30%), and why does honesty matter so much in it?

Why weight the report this heavily, and why insist it be honest rather than just impressive? Then tap.

Show the answer

The report is weighted heavily because it is where you DEMONSTRATE and CONSOLIDATE the whole internship, your work, your learning, and your ability to reflect and communicate professionally, so it evidences much of what the internship is meant to develop; and honesty matters so much because the report's entire value, to you and to the assessment, depends on it being a true account, and dishonesty is both detectable and self-defeating. Take the weight first. The internship's purposes include applying your knowledge to real work, developing skills, and being able to document and communicate professional work, and the final report is the deliverable where all of that comes together in one place. Writing it makes you reflect on and make sense of the experience (what did I do, what did I learn, what challenges did I overcome), which is where much of the deep learning of an internship actually crystallises. It also exercises real professional skills, structuring a document, describing technical work clearly, reflecting honestly, writing and presenting well, that matter throughout your career. Because the report both evidences the internship and develops these valuable abilities, it reasonably carries a large share (30%) of the grade. Now honesty. The report's value comes entirely from being a TRUE record of YOUR real experience: an honest report genuinely demonstrates your work and growth and gives you a real record you can be proud of and draw on later, whereas a fabricated or inflated one demonstrates nothing real and is worthless as evidence of your ability. Dishonesty is also self-defeating here, because the report does not stand alone: it is cross-checked against your supervisor-signed logbook and, crucially, against your PRESENTATION and VIVA, where examiners question you about your work; someone who invented work cannot convincingly answer detailed questions about it, so fabrication tends to collapse under scrutiny and damages credibility badly. Moreover, honesty is itself part of what is assessed and valued, the declaration you sign affirms the report is your genuine work, and integrity is a core professional quality the internship aims to build. And practically, honesty is easier and better: an honest account of real work, including genuine challenges you overcame, is more specific, more credible, and often more impressive than a hollow perfect-sounding story, and you already have the material (your logbook and memory) to write it. So the report is worth a lot because it captures and develops the heart of the internship, and it must be honest because only a true report actually does that, stands up to the viva, and reflects the integrity the whole exercise is meant to instil. Tell the real story well, and it is both the right thing and the high-scoring thing.
