Conversations and Dialogue writing

Dialogue writing એટલે એક વિશ્વાસપાત્ર conversation ને script સ્વરૂપે લખવું: નામ, colon, દરેક speaker માટે નવી line, natural વારાફરતી વાત, અને કોણ કોની સાથે બોલે છે એ પ્રમાણેનો register.

જે conversation નકલી લાગે છે

એક exam નો dialogue જુઓ, student અને librarian વચ્ચેનો:

Student: I desire to procure a book concerning the C programming language.

Librarian: Indeed. Kindly furnish your identity card forthwith.

Grammar ની દૃષ્ટિએ perfect છે, પણ આ દુનિયામાં કોઈ પણ માણસ આવી રીતે ક્યારેય બોલ્યો નથી. Dialogue writing માં સૌથી પહેલી વાત જે તપાસાય છે એ આ છે: સાચે જ માણસો આવી lines બોલે ખરા? આ topic તમને એ test પાસ કરવાનું શીખવે છે.

Theory

તમે એક movie scene લખો છો

Dialogue એટલે એક નાનકડી film script: 2 characters, એક setting, એક purpose, અને એવી lines જે actor શરમાયા વગર બોલી શકે. Directors લાકડા જેવી lines reject કરી દે છે; examiners ને પણ એવું જ થાય છે. કોઈ પણ line લખતાં પહેલાં એને મનમાં સાંભળો: જો textbook બોલતું હોય એવું લાગે, તો કાપી નાખો.

Theory

Layout ના નિયમો

લખવાની રીતમાં અમુક mechanics છે જેમાં કોઈ છૂટ નથી:

  • Speaker નું નામ + colon: Ravi: પછી શબ્દો
  • દરેક speaker બદલાય ત્યાં નવી line, અપવાદ વગર
  • ટૂંકા, natural વાક્યો: સાચી વાતચીત ટૂંકી હોય છે
  • આખા dialogue માં tense અને person એકસરખા રહે
  • Register મંજૂરી આપે ત્યાં contractions વાપરો ("I'm", "can't")

Layout એકલો પણ marks લાવે છે; સાચી conversation જો paragraph સ્વરૂપે લખો તો એ marks ગુમાવો.

Theory

Formal કે informal: જોડી વાંચો

2 speakers જ register નક્કી કરે છે:

  • Informal: મિત્રો, ભાઈબહેન, classmates: હળવા શબ્દો, contractions, થોડા exclamations પણ ચાલે
  • Formal: student અને principal, customer અને manager, નાગરિક અને officer: polite, પૂરાં વાક્યો, માનભર્યું ("Could you please...", "Thank you, sir")

Exam ના question માં જ speakers ના નામ આપેલા હોય છે; એ નામ આપવું એ જ instruction છે. 2 મિત્રો formal રીતે વાત કરે એ એટલું જ ખોટું છે જેટલું student principal સાથે slang માં બોલે.

Quiz

Task: એક student અને bank manager વચ્ચે account ખોલવા વિશેનો dialogue. કઈ opening line બંધબેસે?

  1. Student: Yo! Need an account, fast.
  2. Student: Good morning, sir. I would like to open a savings account. Could you guide me?
  3. Student: I hereby express my profound desire for the procurement of banking services.
  4. Student: (writes application silently)
Show the answer

Student: Good morning, sir. I would like to open a savings account. Could you guide me?

Think first

Task: 2 મિત્રો કાલના Maths exam ની તૈયારી વિશે વાત કરે છે, 6-8 turns.

મનમાં plan કરો: purpose, આવરવાના 3 મુદ્દા, opening line, closing line. પછી tap કરો.

Show the answer

એક સાફ plan: Purpose: strategy share કરવી અને ગભરાટ ઓછો કરવો. મુદ્દા: કયા units સૌથી અગત્યના, આજ રાતની revision વહેંચી લેવી, એક past paper solve કરવાનું નક્કી કરવું. Open: "Ready for tomorrow? I'm scared of Unit 3." Close: "Done, video call at 8. We've got this."

Register જુઓ: contractions, ટૂંકા ઉછાળા, સાચી ચિંતા: આ 2 મિત્રો છે, 2 newsreaders નહીં. 3 મુદ્દા આવરતા 6 turns એ small talk ના બાર turns કરતાં ઘણા સારા.

Quiz

એવા dialogue માં શું ખોટું છે જ્યાં એક speaker 10 line નું ભાષણ ફટકારે અને બીજો બસ "yes" અને "okay" કહે?

  1. કંઈ ખોટું નથી, conversation ને કોઈએ તો lead કરવો પડે
  2. એ natural turn-taking તોડે છે; conversation માં ટૂંકા turns exchange થાય, lecture નહીં
  3. Layout ના નિયમો તૂટે છે
  4. એમાં વધારે speakers હોવા જોઈએ
Show the answer

Formula

Believability ની checklist

પૂરું કરતાં પહેલાં: શું દરેક line મોટેથી બોલી શકાય એવી છે? Register જોડી પ્રમાણે છે? Speakers વ્યાજબી turns માં વારાફરતી બોલ્યા? જરૂરી બધા મુદ્દા આવરાયા? શરૂઆતમાં greeting અને છેલ્લે natural close છે? પાંચેય જવાબ હા = એવો dialogue જે marks લાવે.

Watch out

Summary

Key takeaways
