Listening Vs Hearing

Hearing आपके कानों के साथ होता है; listening वो है जो आपका mind उस sound के साथ करने का decision लेता है: ध्यान देना, interpret करना, समझना।

Theory

You heard the whole lecture and learned nothing

Theory

The radio in the room

सोचिए एक भरे कमरे में radio बज रहा है। जिस किसी के कान ठीक हैं वो सब उसे hear करते हैं, बिना कोशिश किए, बिना choice के। पर सिर्फ वही इंसान जो रुककर, ध्यान लगाकर उसके lyrics follow कर रहा है, वो listening कर रहा है। Hearing मतलब radio की आवाज़ आपके कानों तक पहुँचना; listening मतलब आपके mind का उस station की तरफ मुड़ना।

Theory

Hearing: the automatic half

Hearing is the natural, automatic process of receiving sound waves through the ears.

मतलब ये पूरी तरह physiological process है: vibrations कानों में आती हैं, nerve signals बनती हैं, brain तक पहुँचती हैं, और ये सब बिना किसी effort या इरादे के होता है। अभी इसी वक्त आप fan की आवाज़, बाहर का traffic, आसपास की बातें सब hear कर रहे हैं, बिना ये decide किए।

अगर आपके कान काम कर रहे हैं, तो hearing बस अपने आप होता रहेगा। इसे आप off नहीं कर सकते।

Theory

Listening: the deliberate half

Listening is the active process of paying attention to sound in order to understand the message.

ये psychological process है: आप select करते हैं कि किस पर focus करना है, concentrate करते हैं, words, tone और context को interpret करते हैं, और अक्सर जो समझ में आया उसे evaluate भी करते हैं।

Listening एक skill है। इससे आप थक जाते हैं, practice से ये बेहतर होती है, और इसे बिल्कुल off किया जा सकता है, जैसा हर सपने में खोया रहने वाला student साबित करता ही है।

Quiz

इनमें से कौन सा statement असली फर्क को सही पकड़ता है?

  1. Hearing के लिए healthy कान चाहिए; listening के लिए तेज़ आवाज़ चाहिए
  2. Hearing involuntary reception है; listening voluntary understanding है
  3. Hearing noise के लिए है; listening music के लिए है
  4. दोनों एक ही process हैं, बस 2 नाम हैं
Show the answer

Theory

The four-axis difference table

Think first

Bus में बैठे हैं, आसपास 20 बातें एकसाथ चल रही हैं। तभी 2 seat दूर कोई आपके college का नाम लेता है, और झट से आपका ध्यान उस बातचीत पर चला जाता है।

बताइए वो exact पल कौन सा था जब hearing, listening बन गया? पहले सोचिए, फिर tap कीजिए।

Show the answer

Quiz

Show the answer

Formula

The phrase that impresses examiners

अपने difference-table वाले answer को इस line से close कीजिए: "Hearing is done with the ears; listening is done with the ears and the mind." फिर एक example दीजिए (lecture को daydreaming के साथ hearing करना vs उसे listening करके याद रखना)। 3 या ज़्यादा differences, एक example, और एक closing line: यही full marks वाला structure है।

Watch out

The half-answer trap

Listening को सिर्फ "careful hearing" मत define कर देना। इससे असली बात छूट जाती है: listening में message को interpret और evaluate करना भी शामिल है, सिर्फ ध्यान से receive करना नहीं। जिन answers में understanding या interpretation शब्द नहीं आते, वो वही marks गँवा देते हैं जिन्हें देने के लिए ये question बना है।

Summary

Key takeaways

  • Hearing: sound का automatic, involuntary, physiological reception।
  • Listening: voluntary, psychological attention, जिसका मकसद meaning समझना होता है।
  • 4 axes: nature, process, effort, level।
  • आप listening किए बिना hear कर सकते हैं, पर hearing किए बिना कभी listen नहीं कर सकते।
  • Memory hook: कान hear करते हैं; कान plus mind listen करते हैं।
