एक ही class, 4 तरीके से fail

एक ही lecture, 4 students, और चारों अलग-अलग तरीके से fail:

  • Aman corridor के पास बैठा है और उसे ज़्यादातर crowd का शोर ही सुनाई देता है
  • Priya professor की तेज़ English follow नहीं कर पा रही
  • Rahul के दिमाग में कल की लड़ाई बार-बार घूम रही है
  • Sneha को topic इतना repetitive लग रहा है कि उसका ध्यान भटक जाता है

4 students, listening zero, और किसी की भी fail होने की वजह एक जैसी नहीं थी। Listening ठीक करने की शुरुआत यहीं से होती है कि आप पहचानें, आपको कौन सा barrier पकड़ा है।

Theory

Noise सिर्फ room में नहीं होता

एक phone call तब भी fail होती है जब line पर static आ रहा हो, लेकिन तब भी जब सामने वाला mumble कर रहा हो, या आप इतने परेशान हों कि focus ही न कर पाएँ, या बात इतनी boring हो कि आपको परवाह ही न रहे। Listening का "noise" भी बिलकुल ऐसा ही है: वो environment में रहता है, language में, आपके mind में, या content में। 4 अलग sources, पर result एक ही: message मर जाता है।

बाहर से आने वाले barriers: environment और language

  • Physical/environmental: traffic और crowd का शोर, गर्मी, खराब seating, बिगड़े हुए microphones। Sound आप तक साफ़ पहुँचता ही नहीं, यानी receiving के stage पर ही चीज़ टूट जाती है।
  • Linguistic: jargon और भारी-भरकम vocabulary, बहुत तेज़ या बहुत धीमे बोलना, strong accents, unclear pronunciation। आपको सब सुनाई तो देता है पर समझ बहुत कम आता है, यहाँ decoding का stage टूटता है।

अंदर से आने वाले barriers: mind और content

  • Psychological/personal: speaker के लिए मन में पहले से बना prejudice, stress, गुस्सा, boredom, या वो classic आदत, कि सामने वाला बोल ही रहा है और आप अपने मन में जवाब तैयार कर रहे हैं। दिमाग पहले से ही किसी और चीज़ में busy पड़ा है।
  • Content/speaker-related: topic या तो बहुत मुश्किल है या बहुत basic, सच में boring है, या speaker ऐसा है जो इधर-उधर की बातें करता है और चीज़ें repeat करता रहता है। Attention को खुराक ही नहीं मिलती और processing रुक जाती है।

Psychological barrier

Room तो ठीक था, language भी clear थी, content भी important था, पर आपका MIND जवाब rehearse करने में busy था, यह textbook वाला psychological barrier है और शायद smart लोगों में सबसे common भी। Debaters, interviewers और toppers सब इसी एक आदत से लड़ते हैं।

Guest lecture है, expert भी शानदार है, पर accent बहुत thick है, ऊपर से आपकी seat एक खड़खड़ करते AC के बगल में है, और आप पहले से ही मानकर बैठे हैं कि guest lectures time की बर्बादी हैं।

गिनिए कि आपके खिलाफ़ कितने barriers काम कर रहे हैं, हर एक का family बताइए, और चुनिए कि कौन सा एक आप तुरंत fix कर सकते हैं। फिर tap कीजिए।

एक साथ 3: accent (linguistic), खड़खड़ करता AC (physical), और आपकी "time की बर्बादी" वाली सोच (psychological)।

तुरंत fix होने वाला: psychological वाला, जब आप जान-बूझकर उस judgement को side में रख दें, और काफ़ी हद तक physical वाला भी, seat बदलकर। Accent की आदत तो कुछ ही मिनटों में पड़ जाएगी, बशर्ते बाकी 2 चीज़ें संभल गई हों। Barriers एक के ऊपर एक stack होते हैं, इसलिए सस्ते वाले पहले clear कीजिए।

Clarification या simpler terms के लिए पूछना

Jargon एक linguistic barrier है, तो remedy भी language पर काम करना चाहिए: पूछ लीजिए, एक example माँगिए, या term note कर लीजिए ताकि बाद में देख सकें। Seat बदलना physical barriers से लड़ता है, breathing psychological से। Remedy को उसी family से match कीजिए; शांत room jargon को translate नहीं कर देगा।

Formula

Remedy kit, हर family के लिए एक

Physical: environment ठीक कीजिए (जगह बदलिए, दरवाज़ा बंद कीजिए, mic ठीक करवाइए)। Linguistic: repetition या आसान शब्द माँगिए। Psychological: phone और मन के अंदर की बकबक को side में रखिए, open mind रखिए। Content: actively engage कीजिए, यानी जैसे-जैसे वो बोलें आप मन ही मन summarise करते चलिए। और एक universal आदत: यह notice कीजिए कि इस वक्त कौन सा barrier चल रहा है, सिर्फ़ यह awareness ही आधा loss recover कर देती है।

Blame का जाल

Students ऐसे answers लिखते हैं जिनमें हर barrier की गलती speaker पर डाल दी जाती है (accent, boring topic, खराब organisation)। पर आधी families तो LISTENER के अंदर ही रहती हैं: prejudice, stress, जवाब rehearse करना, phone check करना। Balanced answers, और balanced listeners, दोनों sides को नाम देते हैं।
