Reading Comprehension

Comprehension वो चीज़ है जो decoding के बाद होती है: text क्या कह रहा है, क्या imply कर रहा है, और writer असल में कर क्या रहा है, ये समझना।

Theory

वो passage जो आपने पढ़ा तो सही, पर समझा नहीं

सोचिए exam hall है। cyber security पर एक comprehension passage दिया है। आपने हर word पढ़ा, वो भी 2 बार। फिर question 2 पूछता है: "Why does the author call passwords 'the weakest link'?"

...और तभी आपको एहसास होता है कि passage में तो कहीं SAY ही नहीं किया कि क्यों। बस hint दिया है, imply किया है। expect करता है कि आप 2 paragraphs को खुद जोड़ लोगे।

तो स्वागत है comprehension में: reading की वो layer जो word पहचानने के बाद से शुरू होती है।

Theory

Theory

4 तरह के questions

हर comprehension question किसी न किसी family का होता है, और हर family को attack करने का अपना तरीका है:

  • Literal: answer text में ही बैठा है (who, what, when, where): बस ढूंढो और restate कर दो
  • Inferential: answer imply किया गया है: अलग अलग sentences के clues जोड़ने पड़ेंगे
  • Vocabulary: एक word का मतलब YAHAN, इस context में क्या है, dictionary वाला नहीं
  • Critical/evaluative: writer के argument पर आपकी अपनी राय, पर passage से support करके

अगर family गलत पहचानी, तो आप गलत game ही खेलने लगोगे।

Quiz

Passage कहता है: "He checked his watch for the fifth time and glanced at the door." और question पूछता है कि character कैसा feel कर रहा है। ये कौन सा question type है, और answer क्या होगा?

  1. Literal; passage कहता है कि वो nervous feel करता है
  2. Inferential; उसका behaviour impatience या anxiety को imply करता है
  3. Vocabulary; ये 'glanced' का meaning पूछ रहा है
  4. Critical; ये character पर आपकी राय पूछ रहा है
Show the answer

Theory

Passage को attack करने का method

एक ऐसा exam routine जो हर बार काम आएगा:

1. Preview: title और हर paragraph की पहली line, बस 20 seconds

2. आराम से पढ़ो, हर paragraph के main ideas mark करते चलो

3. सारे questions पढ़ो, note करो कि हर question असल में पूछ क्या रहा है

4. हर question के लिए उसी relevant portion पर वापस जाओ, कभी memory से answer मत दो

5. अपने words में answer लिखो, question word से match करके: "why" को reason चाहिए, "how" को method

(Passage से पहले questions पढ़ना भी चलता है; कोई एक order चुन लो और उसी को practise करो।)

Think first

एक question पूछता है: "HOW did the company reduce its losses?" और student answer देता है: "Because losses were hurting its reputation."

Content तो passage से ही लिया है, फिर भी marks zero। tap करने से पहले खुद ढूंढो गलती कहां है।

Show the answer

Student ने एक WHY का answer दे दिया, जो किसी ने पूछा ही नहीं था। "How" method मांगता है (costs cut करना, automate करना, renegotiate करना), motive नहीं।

Question words एक तरह के contracts हैं: who → person, when → time, why → reason, how → method। Marks इसी contract को निभाने पर मिलते हैं, और ये एक ही आदत, यानी answer के TYPE को question word से match करना, किसी भी speed technique से ज़्यादा marks बचाती है।

Theory

आदतें जो comprehension बढ़ाती हैं

4 आदतें, चारों reading के दौरान active रहती हैं:

  • Prior knowledge activate करो: 10 seconds "इस बारे में मुझे पहले से क्या पता है?" सोचने से दिमाग तैयार हो जाता है
  • Text से सवाल करो: "ये यहां क्यों है? इसके बाद क्या निकलता है?"
  • हर paragraph का main idea ढूंढो: usually कोई एक sentence उसे carry करता है
  • Connectors पर नज़र रखो: "however" मतलब turn आ रहा है, "therefore" मतलब conclusion, "for instance" मतलब example: ये text के road signs हैं

Quiz

कौन सी आदत सबसे सीधे तरीके से उस classic गलती को रोकती है, जिसमें student passage की जगह memory से answer दे देता है?

  1. पहले title पढ़ना
  2. लिखने से पहले हर question के लिए relevant lines पर वापस जाना
  3. हर sentence underline करना
  4. Passage को 3 बार पढ़ना
Show the answer

Formula

Scoring rules जो desk पर चिपका लेने लायक हैं

Answer passage से 2, अपने words में, marks के हिसाब से जितनी length चाहिए उतनी। Question word को honour करो। कभी पूरे sentences copy मत करो (examiner इसे non-comprehension समझता है), और कभी एक hard question को 3 easy questions का time मत खाने 2: उस पर mark लगाओ, आगे बढ़ो, बाद में लौट आओ।

Watch out

Knowledge का जाल

सबसे खतरनाक passages वो होते हैं जिन topics को आप अच्छे से जानते हो, क्योंकि तब आप text की जगह अपनी knowledge से answer देने लगते हो, और comprehension questions तो सिर्फ ये देखते हैं कि आप ISI passage के कितने वफादार रहे, चाहे passage reality से उल्टा ही क्यों न कहे। हर passage को उन 10 minutes के लिए सच का इकलौता source मान कर चलो।

Summary

Key takeaways

  • Comprehension = समझना, interpret करना और evaluate करना, सिर्फ word पहचानने से आगे।
  • 4 question families: literal, inferential, vocabulary-in-context, critical।
  • Method: preview करो, पढ़ो और mark करो, questions पढ़ो, text पर वापस जाओ, अपने words में answer 2।
  • Question word को honour करो और answer सिर्फ passage से 2।
  • याद रखने का hook: उन 10 minutes के लिए passage ही इकलौता सच है।
