Domain मतलब function क्या accept करता है, range मतलब वो actually क्या produce करता है, और one-one/onto/bijective बताते हैं कि inputs और outputs कितने fairly आपस में pair होते हैं।

जो crash आपका calculator करने से मना कर देता है

किसी भी calculator में 1 ÷ 0 type कीजिए: error आ जाएगा। Real numbers में √(−4) माँगिए: फिर से error।

हर function के पास कुछ ऐसे inputs होते हैं जिन्हें वो simply accept ही नहीं कर सकता। जो inputs वो accept कर सकता है, उनका set उसका domain कहलाता है, और इसको ढूँढना इस unit के सबसे बार-बार पूछे जाने वाले exam questions में से एक है। और जो outputs वो actually produce करता है, वो बनते हैं range। आज आप दोनों को जल्दी से ढूँढना सीखेंगे।

एक bus route

Function को एक bus route की तरह सोचिए। Domain वो हर stop है जहाँ से passengers चढ़ सकते हैं। Codomain वो हर stop है जो route map पर छपा हुआ है। और range वो stops हैं जहाँ bus आज actually किसी को उतारती है। हो सकता है कुछ छपे हुए stops पर bus कभी किसी को न उतारे, और यही तो है range ⊊ codomain।

Domain ढूँढना: forbidden values का शिकार कीजिए

Real-valued formulas के लिए domain होता है सारे real numbers, बस उन values को छोड़कर जो इन 3 rules में से किसी एक को तोड़ती हैं:

  • कोई denominator 0 बन जाए
  • square root (या किसी भी even root) के अंदर वाला expression negative हो जाए
  • logarithm का argument positive न हो

Example: f(x) = 1/(x − 3) में x = 3 पर पहला rule टूटता है, तो domain है सारे reals सिवाय 3 के।

वो सारे x जहाँ x ≥ 2

Root के अंदर वाले expression को x − 2 ≥ 0 satisfy करना ही पड़ेगा, तो x ≥ 2। ध्यान दीजिए, x = 2 बिल्कुल ठीक है: √0 = 0 exist करता है। Option C गलती से 2 को छोड़ रहा है (वो strictness तो logarithms और denominators की होती है), और option D root वाली problem पर division का rule लगा रहा है।

Range ढूँढना: actually बाहर क्या आता है

Range पूछता है: कौन-कौन से y values actually produce होते हैं?

2 standard तरीके हैं:

  • Algebra: built-in limits पहचानिए। y = x² कभी negative हो ही नहीं सकता, तो इसका range है y ≥ 0।
  • Graph: range होता है curve का vertical फैलाव, यानी graph जितनी भी height तक पहुँचता है।

Range को हमेशा एक set या inequality के रूप में लिखिए, कोई ढीली-ढाली description में नहीं।

Tap करने से पहले मन में ही range decide कर लीजिए। यह machine सबसे छोटा output कौन-सा बना सकती है?

Range = सारे y ≥ 5।

x² कम से कम 0 होता है, तो x² + 5 कम से कम 5 होगा, और 5 से ऊपर की हर value किसी न किसी x से मिल जाती है। यह +5 पूरे range को ऊपर उठा देता है: यह shift आप किसी भी "x² plus एक constant" वाले exam question पर बिना दोबारा calculate किए use कर सकते हैं।

3 types: one-one, onto, bijective

Functions को इस बात से classify किया जाता है कि inputs और outputs कैसे pair होते हैं:

  • Injective (one-one): अलग-अलग inputs हमेशा अलग-अलग outputs देते हैं। Formally, f(a₁) = f(a₂) से a₁ = a₂ आना ही पड़ेगा।
  • Surjective (onto): codomain का हर element hit होता है; range = codomain।
  • Bijective: दोनों एक साथ, यानी एक perfect pairing जिसमें कुछ भी double नहीं और कुछ भी छूटा नहीं।

Example: ℤ पर f(x) = x + 1 bijective है। और ℝ पर f(x) = x² न ही one-one है न onto: f(2) = f(−2) होने से one-one टूट जाता है, और negative targets कभी hit होते ही नहीं।

Onto पूछता है: क्या codomain का हर element reach होता है? चूँकि कोई भी x, x² = −1 नहीं देता, इसलिए जवाब है नहीं। Option A एक सच्ची बात है, पर वो ONE-ONE को गलत साबित करती है, onto को नहीं; इन दोनों definitions को अलग रखना ही तो examiners test करते हैं। Domain में negatives तो आते ही हैं, और f एक बिल्कुल valid function है।

Watch out

3 गड़बड़ियाँ जो marks खा जाती हैं

Question में codomain पूछा हो और वहाँ range लिख देना (जब तक function onto न हो, ये दोनों अलग होते हैं)। Root वाले domains में boundary को छोड़ देना (x ≥ 2 में 2 शामिल है; strict inequality तो सिर्फ division और log पर लगती है)। और f(2) = f(−2) वाला argument onto-ness के खिलाफ use कर देना, जबकि वो तो one-one को disprove करता है। इन तीनों moments पर थोड़ा रुककर सोचिए।

Code में input validation असल में domain thinking ही है: उन values को reject कीजिए जो formula को crash कर दें। Hash functions को इसी से study किया जाता है कि वो one-one से कितनी दूर हैं, और एक bijection ही वजह है कि encryption को exactly एक key से undo किया जा सकता है। अगला topic: tables और graphs से function formulas बनाना।
