मान लीजिए आप लगातार 3 दिन एक ही auto में बैठते हैं।

2 km का किराया ₹43 आता है। 4 km का ₹61। और 6 km का ₹79।

अब बिना driver से पूछे, क्या आप बता सकते हैं कि 10 km का किराया कितना होगा? इस topic के आखिर तक आप ये एक minute से भी कम में solve कर लेंगे, क्योंकि इन numbers के पीछे छुपा है एक function, और आप अभी सीखने वाले हैं कि data से उसका formula कैसे वापस बनाते हैं।

Three views of one story

देखिए, function असल में एक कहानी है कि एक quantity दूसरी पर कैसे depend करती है। Table इस कहानी को घटनाओं की list की तरह बताता है, graph एक तस्वीर की तरह, और formula एक line में पूरा सार बता देता है। Construction का मतलब है कहानी को एक form में सुनना और दूसरे form में दोबारा सुनाना। कुछ नया नहीं बनता, आप बस translate करते हैं।

The straight-line formula: y = mx + c

इस level पर ज़्यादातर construction के सवाल linear होते हैं, यानी data इस formula को follow करता है

y = mx + c

  • m है slope, यानी जब x हर बार 1 बढ़ता है तो y कितना बदलता है
  • c है y-intercept, यानी x = 0 पर y की value, मतलब "starting amount"

ये 2 numbers मिल गए, तो समझिए पूरा function वापस बन गया।

Table लीजिए: x = 0, 1, 2, 3 और y = 3, 5, 7, 9।

1. y की differences check करिए: 5−3 = 2, 7−5 = 2, 9−7 = 2। हर बार same आ रही है, तो data linear है और m = 2।

2. x = 0 पर y पढ़िए: y = 3, तो c = 3।

3. लिख दीजिए: y = 2x + 3।

अगर x = 0 वाली row है ही नहीं? तो कोई भी known point ले लीजिए: उसका x और y, y = mx + c में डालिए और c solve कर लीजिए।

हर step पर y की difference 3 है, तो m = 3। x = 0 वाली row है नहीं, इसलिए point (1, 10) use कीजिए: 10 = 3·1 + c से c = 7 आ जाता है। Option B ने पहली y value को ही intercept मान लिया, ये सबसे common shortcut वाली गलती है: 10 तो x = 1 पर y है, x = 0 पर नहीं।

मान लीजिए एक straight line (0, 1) और (2, 5) से होकर गुज़र रही है:

1. Slope: m = (y₂ − y₁)/(x₂ − x₁) = (5 − 1)/(2 − 0) = 2

2. Intercept: point (0, 1) तो y-axis पर ही बैठा है, इसलिए c = 1 सीधे मिल गया

3. Equation: y = 2x + 1

अगर graph में कोई तीसरा point दिख रहा है तो उससे check कर लीजिए; line पर जो भी point है, उसे equation satisfy करनी ही चाहिए।

वापस auto पर आते हैं: 2 km का ₹43, 4 km का ₹61, 6 km का ₹79।

mind में ही m (per-km rate) और c (base fare) निकालिए, फिर 10 km का किराया predict कीजिए।

किराया हर 2 km पर ₹18 बढ़ता है, तो m = 9 rupees per km। अब (2, 43) से: 43 = 9·2 + c, यानी c = 25 (यही base fare है)। Formula बन गया: fare = 9x + 25।

10 km के लिए: 9·10 + 25 = ₹115। बस यही तो है construction: data अंदर डालो, formula बाहर निकालो, prediction तैयार।

Word problems आपको m और c छुपाकर देते हैं: "एक fixed charge plus एक constant rate" हमेशा y = mx + c ही होता है।

  • fixed charge, base fare, starting salary → c
  • per km, per hour, per unit → m

एक बार formula बन गया, तो आप उससे table बना सकते हैं और graph भी plot कर सकते हैं, और पूरा circle complete हो जाता है: description → formula → table → graph।

y = 15x + 20

per-hour वाला rate घंटों से multiply होता है (m = 15) और एक बार का बैठने वाला charge अकेला खड़ा रहता है (c = 20)। Option A ने दोनों के roles उल्टे कर दिए, यही word-problem की सबसे आम गलती है: हमेशा पूछिए "कौन सा number per unit repeat हो रहा है?" वही m होता है।

Check before you commit

2 आदतें construction की लगभग सारी गलतियां रोक देती हैं: linear मानने से पहले verify कर लीजिए कि y की differences सचमुच constant हैं (अगर वो बदल रही हैं तो function linear नहीं है और y = mx + c लगेगा ही नहीं), और अपनी final equation में हमेशा एक ऐसा point डालकर check कीजिए जो अभी use नहीं किया। अगर fail हो जाए, तो ज़्यादातर गड़बड़ intercept में ही होती है।
