एक ही diagram, सबका बाप

Chirag एक धूल भरा cabinet screwdriver से खोलता है और कहता है: "Motherboard, processor, RAM, hard disk। अब ये सब parts भूल जाओ। यहाँ अंदर जो कुछ भी आप कभी देखोगे, और एक ₹50 crore के supercomputer में, और आपके phone में, वो सब एक ही diagram में fit हो जाता है, जो 1940s में बना था।"

और वो बिल्कुल सही कह रहा है। ये एक map सीख लो, फिर हर machine जानी-पहचानी जगह जैसी लगेगी। Exam भी यही बोलता है: "draw and explain the block diagram" तो पक्का आने वाला question है।

एक restaurant का kitchen

Waiters order लेकर आते हैं (input)। Head chef हर order पढ़ता है और kitchen को direct करता है: "तुम काटो, तुम fry करो, अब plate लगाओ" (control unit)। जो हाथ असल में काटते और fry करते हैं, वो हैं (ALU)। Fridge और store-room में ingredients और बनी हुई dishes रखी रहती हैं (memory)। Serving counters खाना बाहर भेजते हैं (output)। कोई भी unit अकेले खाना नहीं बनाती; head chef ही सबको coordinate करता है।

MEMORY

Data अंदर आता है, CPU उसे process करता है, results बाहर जाते हैं। Memory CPU के साथ लगातार दोनों तरफ का लेन-देन करती रहती है: instructions और data ऊपर जाते हैं, results नीचे वापस आते हैं।

हर unit करती क्या है

  • Input unit: data अंदर लाती है, binary में convert करके (keyboard, mouse, scanner)।
  • CU (Control Unit): director है। Instructions fetch करती है, हर unit को बताती है कि क्या करना है और कब करना है। खुद कोई calculation नहीं करती।
  • ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit): असली worker। सारा arithmetic (+, -, ×, ÷) और सारी logical comparisons (78 > 65 है क्या?)।
  • Registers: CPU के अंदर मुट्ठी भर, सबसे तेज़ छोटे storage slots, जिनमें अभी जिस चीज़ पर काम चल रहा है वो रहती है।
  • Memory unit: data और instructions रखती है; Output unit binary results को वापस इंसान के समझने लायक form में बदल देती है।

ALU

Comparisons logical operations होती हैं, यानी ALU का L। ज़्यादातर students जो भी "decision" जैसा लगता है, वो Control Unit को दे देते हैं, पर CU तो सिर्फ traffic direct करती है; वो कभी calculate या compare नहीं करती। ALU दोनों करती है, arithmetic भी और logic भी। ये फर्क बार-बार exam में पूछा जाता है।

आपने calculator app में 5 + 3 type किया और = दबाया। अब मन में block diagram में इसका सफर चलाओ: कौन सी units इसे छूती हैं, और किस order में?

Input (keys) 5, +, 3 को binary में भेजती है → memory इन्हें रखती है → CU instruction fetch करती है और ALU को add करने का order देती है → ALU 8 compute करके एक register में डालती है → result memory में जाता है → output (screen) पर 8 दिख जाता है।

Watch out

3 जगह marks leak होते हैं

एक: CU को calculation का काम देना ("CU processes data")। वो direct करती है; process ALU करती है। 2: diagram बिना arrows के बनाना, arrows ही तो data flow हैं और उनके marks होते हैं। 3: CU और ALU के बगल में "CPU" को एक अलग unit की तरह लिख देना। CPU तो वो box है जो CU + ALU + registers को अपने अंदर रखता है, कोई चौथा भाई नहीं।

Exam recipe: 5-mark वाला version

Diagram बनाओ, सारे arrows और labels के साथ। फिर हर unit की एक-एक साफ line: input (data in, binary), CU (directs, no calculation), ALU (arithmetic + logical operations), registers (fastest, inside CPU), memory (holds data + instructions), output (results in human form)। Diagram + 6 lines = पूरे marks, जब भी ये पूछा जाए।

ये map पूरा subject चलाता है

इस subject का Unit 2 इसी diagram के बीच वाले हिस्से में zoom करता है (processor, memory types, और उन्हें जोड़ने वाले buses)। Unit 3 किनारों में zoom करता है (input और output devices)। यहाँ तक कि अगले semester की C programming भी यही diagram है, बस code में: scanf input देता है, expressions ALU में चलती हैं, printf output है। हर future topic को इसी map पर pin कर देना।
