एक दोपहर को Chirag की shop पर 4 calls आती हैं।

एक student को coding और gaming के लिए machine चाहिए। एक co-operative bank पूछ रही है कि हर branch के transactions process करने वाला कोई system चाहिए। एक weather researcher बात कर रहा है उन machines की जो monsoon predict करती हैं। और एक delivery boy को कुछ ऐसा चाहिए जो उसकी जेब में आ जाए।

चारों एक ही word बोल रहे हैं: "computer"। लेकिन इनका मतलब 4 बिल्कुल अलग machines से है। इन्हें छाँटना ही इस topic का (और इसके favourite exam question का) पूरा काम है।

Vehicles समझिए, gadgets नहीं

Vehicles के हिसाब से सोचिए। एक goods train (mainframe) fixed और reliable routes पर भारी loads ढोती है। एक Formula 1 car (supercomputer) सिर्फ एक ही चीज़ के लिए बनी है: किसी भी कीमत पर raw speed। एक city bus (minicomputer) एक मोहल्ले की भीड़ को serve करती है। और एक scooter (microcomputer) एक ही person का होता है। कोई नहीं पूछता कि कौन सा vehicle "best" है: यह पूरी तरह काम पर depend करता है।

Micro family

Microcomputers (micro इसलिए क्योंकि इनका CPU एक microprocessor होता है) वो हैं जो आप खुद use करते हैं, और छोटे होते जाते sizes में मिलते हैं:

  • Desktop: एक जगह fixed, per rupee सबसे ज़्यादा power, upgrade करना आसान।

Supercomputer और mainframe को आपस में मिला देना। दोनों बड़े और महँगे होते हैं, इसलिए students इन्हें एक ही समझ लेते हैं और आसान marks गँवा देते हैं। फर्क पक्का कर लीजिए: supercomputer = science के लिए सबसे तेज़ calculation (monsoon prediction, nuclear simulation); mainframe = बहुत बड़े पैमाने पर reliable transaction serving (banks, railways, insurance)। एक crunch करता है, दूसरा serve करता है।

जो "cloud" आप Unit 4 में पढ़ेंगे, वो असल में powerful computers के racks हैं जो आपको remotely serve करते हैं, यानी mainframe वाला idea नए रूप में। और आगे जब आप अपना BCA project किसी server पर deploy करेंगे, तब आप इसी ladder का एक rung चुन रहे होंगे: कितने users, कितनी reliability, कितनी cost। यह ladder एक sizing tool है, कोई रटने वाली बात नहीं।
