Theory
"The internet is down"
The shop's connection dies mid-afternoon. The customer waiting for a bill sighs: "Internet down again."
Chirag, testing cables, asks you the question that sorts beginners from BCA students: "WHAT exactly is down? The websites? Google's office? Some big computer in America?"
None of those. To answer properly you need two words most people wrongly treat as synonyms: the internet, and the web.
Theory
Roads vs shops
The internet is the road network: physical cables, towers and routing equipment connecting crores of machines worldwide. The WWW is the shops built along those roads: linked pages you visit with a browser. Email is the postal van on the same roads; a video call is a phone line over them; a download is a delivery truck. One road network, many services driving on it.
Theory
The two terms, formally
Internet: the global network of networks, millions of smaller networks (homes, colleges, companies, ISPs) interconnected and speaking common rules (protocols) so any machine can reach any other. Nobody owns it; everyone connects to it.
WWW (World Wide Web): an information service ON the internet, interlinked pages (documents connected by hyperlinks) fetched by a browser. Invented by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989.
The test: email, WhatsApp and online games all work without any web page, internet yes, web no.

Quiz
Which statement correctly separates the internet from the WWW?
- The internet is the network itself; the WWW is one service running on it
- They are two names for the same thing
- The WWW is the hardware; the internet is the software
- The internet is only websites; the WWW includes email too
Show the answer
The internet is the network itself; the WWW is one service running on it
Roads vs shops: the internet is the connectivity, the web is one (huge) service using it, alongside email, calls and streaming. Option C reverses reality, and option D swaps the two words entirely. This distinction is asked so often it is practically a rite of passage.
Think first
Test yourself on WhatsApp
When you send a WhatsApp message, are you using the internet? Are you using the WWW? Answer both before revealing.
Show the answer
Internet: yes, your message travels the global network. WWW: no, no web pages or browser are involved; WhatsApp is its own messaging service riding the same roads. (WhatsApp Web in a browser? THAT adds the web as the doorway. The naming actually helps you here.)
Watch out
Where marks leak
Writing "internet and WWW are the same": instant mark loss; lead with the distinction. Saying a company or government "owns the internet": it is a cooperative of networks, nobody owns the whole. And in "types of internet services" questions, name the service + what it does + one example, a bare list of app names earns half marks.
Theory
What answers the customer
So what was "down" at the shop? Just the shop's own link to its ISP, one driveway blocked, while the roads and shops of the world carried on. Next lessons meet the machines at that driveway: the modem and router blinking in the corner, and the WiFi, hotspot and cable options for rebuilding the link.
Summary
Key takeaways

- Email, calls, streaming and games use the internet without the web.
- Services to name: WWW, email, file transfer, VoIP, streaming, e-commerce.
- "Internet down" usually means YOUR link to the ISP is down.
- Memory hook: internet roads, web shops.
