Theory
A district decides not to pay
Bardoli taluka, 1928. The government raises land revenue steeply, around 22 percent, on farmers already struggling. The farmers ask a lawyer-turned-organiser what to do.
His answer is total: not one rupee, from anyone, until the raise is undone. No violence, no half-measures, and no farmer left alone against the state.
What followed made an entire empire blink, gave Vallabhbhai a new name, and showed what 'people's leader' means in practice. This lesson is about that role: not the saint, not the king, the organiser.
Theory
The engineer of the movement
If the freedom movement were a great machine, Gandhi designed its moral engine, and Patel was the engineer who made it actually run in the mud of real districts: village committees, volunteer rosters, supply lines, information flowing faster than the government's. Ideas win arguments; organisation wins campaigns. Joshi's novel dramatises exactly this gift, the man who could turn a principle into a working system of thousands of households.
At a glance
The organiser's ladder: each rung is a campaign, and Bardoli is the one exams ask about most.
| Campaign | Year | Patel's role and the outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Kheda Satyagraha | 1918 | First major organising role: no-tax campaign for famine-hit Kheda farmers; relief won, a method proven |
| Ahmedabad municipality | 1920s | Civic leadership as municipal president: drains, water, schools, administration learned hands-on |
| Bardoli Satyagraha | 1928 | Total non-payment against the revenue hike; village-level organisation forces an inquiry and relief; the women of Bardoli name him Sardar |
| Salt Satyagraha | 1930 | Arrested early in the campaign; the organisation he built carries on without him |
| Quit India | 1942-45 | Imprisoned with the leadership at Ahmednagar Fort |
Quiz
Where did the title 'Sardar' come from?
- The British government conferred it as an honour
- He inherited it from his family
- The women of Bardoli gave it to him after the 1928 satyagraha's success
- Gandhi awarded it at a Congress session
Show the answer
The women of Bardoli gave it to him after the 1928 satyagraha's success
The title came from below, not above, and that is the whole point of this topic: the people he organised renamed him. After Bardoli's disciplined victory, the women of Bardoli called him સરદાર, their chief, and the name replaced Vallabhbhai in the nation's mouth. No government or committee could have conferred it; a people's leader is titled by the people.
Think first
Why did farmers trust a big-city barrister?
Bardoli's farmers staked their land on his word. Think first: what made a London-trained lawyer trustworthy to them?
Show the answer
Three things, and the novel builds all three. Origin: he was one of them, a Karamsad farmer's son who knew the field before the courtroom. Return: he gave up the barrister's dress, income and comforts and lived plainly among them, speaking blunt village Gujarati, so the sacrifice was visible. Competence: his campaigns were built so no farmer stood alone, information, volunteers, relief for the evicted, and systems keep promises that speeches cannot. Trust = origin + sacrifice + competence; that formula is worth an exam paragraph by itself.
Watch out
The confusions that cost marks
Keep the pairs straight. Kheda 1918 (his first big campaign) vs Bardoli 1928 (the one that named him Sardar). Bardoli (land-revenue satyagraha) vs Dandi (the 1930 salt march, Gandhi's, during which Patel was arrested early). And the title came from Bardoli's women, not from any government or committee. One wrong pairing can sink an otherwise strong answer on this favourite topic.
Theory
The philosopher and the engineer
Set this beside Unit 2 and you hold a comparison examiners love: Gandhi supplies satyagraha's philosophy (truth, ahimsa, self-suffering), Patel supplies its engineering (organisation, discipline, logistics). Neither works alone: principles without organisation evaporate, organisation without principles hardens. The two Gujaratis on your syllabus are two halves of one method, and saying so, with Kheda or Bardoli as evidence, is a full-marks connection.
Summary
Key takeaways
- Patel's freedom-movement role = the organiser: turning principle into working, disciplined campaigns.
- Kheda 1918 proved the method; Ahmedabad's municipality trained the administrator.
- Bardoli 1928: total non-payment against the revenue hike forced an inquiry and relief.
- The women of Bardoli gave him the title Sardar; the people named their own leader.
- Trust formula the novel dramatises: origin + visible sacrifice + competence.
- Memory hook: Gandhi the engine's designer, Patel the engineer, and Bardoli the proof it ran.
