Two lists on the notice board
Riya reaches her college notice board in Surat and finds 2 lists pinned side by side. One names skill courses the college itself will run this term. The other lists approved online courses (MOOCs) she could finish from her hostel room.
Her instruction is one line: pick one, worth 2 credits.
For 2 semesters her skill subjects were fixed for her. This time the university hands her the menu. BCA306 begins with a decision, and this page is about making it well.
Theory
A menu, not a set meal
In Semester 1 your skill course was served like a set meal: everyone got BCA106 (worksheets and Google's cloud tools), and in Semester 2 everyone got BCA206. SEC-03 is the first skill course served as a menu: the university approves a basket of options, your institute publishes the list, and you order what fits your appetite, your schedule, and where you want your career to go.
Theory
The rule, plainly
For BCA306 you select one 2-credit Skill Enhancement Course from either:
- the University-approved skill-based course basket (courses your institute runs or recognises), or
- an approved MOOC or online course (a course on a platform like SWAYAM, NPTEL or Coursera that appears on the approved list).
The word doing all the work is approved. Baskets differ between institutes and change between years, so always confirm the current list with your institute before you enrol.
At a glance
Three roads into the same 2 credits. Whichever you take, it must be on your institute's approved list.
| Route | What it looks like | Suits you when |
|---|---|---|
| Basket course | A skill course run or recognised by your institute, often with scheduled sessions | You want structure, campus contact and local guidance |
| Approved MOOC | An online course from the approved list, done at your own pace with its own certificate | You want flexibility, or a topic the campus list does not offer |
| Internship route | Field or internship training accepted in place of a certificate course (next topic) | You have access to genuine workplace training |
Quiz
Which of these earns the BCA306 credits?
- Any online course you find, as long as you finish it and get a certificate
- One 2-credit course from the approved basket, or a MOOC that is on the approved list
- Only a classroom course; online courses can never count
- Nothing is needed; 2-credit subjects are granted automatically
Show the answer
One 2-credit course from the approved basket, or a MOOC that is on the approved list
Both doors, basket course or MOOC, pass through the word approved. A random online course may teach you plenty and still earn 0 credits if it is not on the list. Online courses can count when approved, so 'classroom only' is a myth, and nothing about the 2 credits is automatic: they are granted only on successful completion.
Follow along
Choosing your SEC in 5 steps
- Get the current list Ask your institute for this year's approved basket and approved MOOC list. Last year's list may have changed.
- Shortlist by direction Pick 2 or 3 options that point where you want to go: data work, web work, accounts software, spoken English.
- Check the fit Compare each option's schedule, delivery mode and end date against your semester calendar.
- Confirm approval first Especially for a MOOC: verify the exact course name appears on the approved list before you pay or enrol.
- Register and keep proof Enrol the way your institute asks, and file every receipt and certificate. They are your evidence at evaluation time.
Think first
Help Jay choose
Jay enjoyed the Python and SQL work in BCA303. His college basket offers a Tally with GST workshop; the approved MOOC list has a beginner data-analytics course. Decide his best pick, and the one thing he must check first, before you tap.
Show the answer
Lean towards the data-analytics MOOC: it builds directly on BCA303 (Python, SQL) and BCA302 (statistics), so his skills compound instead of scattering. But the first check is not the syllabus, it is approval and timing: is that exact course on the approved list, and does its completion window fit the semester? If it fails either check, Tally with GST is a genuinely marketable fallback in Gujarat's business belt. The only wrong move is enrolling in something unapproved.
Watch out
The unapproved-course trap
Every year some student finishes a 30-hour online course, prints the certificate, and then learns it earns 0 credits because the course was never on the approved list. Approval comes before enrolment, not after. And keep the certificate safely: successful completion is what converts your effort into the 2 credits.
Theory
Where this choice pays off
Your SEC choice is a resume line you get to write in Semester 3. Picked well, it feeds forward: a data course sharpens your Semester 5 and 6 project work, an accounts tool opens local job doors, spoken English lifts every interview. The next topics cover the internship alternative, what SEC aims at, how these courses are delivered, and how the 2 credits are marked.
Summary
Key takeaways
- BCA306 (SEC-03) = one 2-credit skill course you choose yourself.
- Two routes: the University-approved skill basket, or an approved MOOC/online course.
- Approved is the key word: confirm the current list with your institute before enrolling.
- Choose by career direction, schedule fit and delivery mode, not by what friends pick.
- Keep enrolment proof and certificates; completion is what earns the credits.
- Memory hook: a menu, not a set meal, and only dishes on the approved menu count.
