Theory
Three friends, three timetables
Riya's skill course meets in the computer lab every Saturday morning. Jay's runs entirely online: recorded lectures and weekly quizzes. Arjun has no classes at all; he reports to a shop in Navsari.
Three completely different weeks. All three are doing BCA306 correctly.
How can one subject look this different? Because SEC does not fix the how: it fixes the outcome and lets the delivery fit the skill.
Theory
The skill picks the vehicle
You would not learn cycling from lectures, or history in a swimming pool. Every skill has a natural vehicle: some travel best by explanation, some by repetition at a machine, some only exist out in the field. SEC's delivery rule simply admits this: let the subject choose how it is taught.
Theory
The rule, plainly
BCA306 may be delivered through any one, or any combination, of:
- Theory: concepts in a classroom or online
- Practical: supervised time on the tool, usually in a lab
- Fieldwork: learning at real sites outside campus
- Internship: working inside an organisation
- Project: building and submitting something
The blend is the course's choice; your 2 credits and the evaluation pattern do not change with it.
At a glance
Five delivery modes. Most real courses blend 2 or 3 of them.
| Mode | What happens | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Theory | Concepts, discussion, notes | Digital marketing fundamentals sessions |
| Practical | Supervised tool time in a lab | Building dashboards in a spreadsheet lab |
| Fieldwork | Learning at real outside sites | Surveying local shops' billing needs |
| Internship | Working in an organisation | A month inside a service centre |
| Project | Build and submit | A small website delivered to a real shop |
Quiz
A basket course runs 1 hour of concepts and 2 lab hours weekly, ending with a submitted mini project. Its delivery is:
- Invalid; a course must pick exactly one mode
- A combination: theory + practical + project
- Pure theory, since concepts are taught
- An internship, since work is involved
Show the answer
A combination: theory + practical + project
Combinations are explicitly allowed: any one or a mix of theory, practical, fieldwork, internship and project. This course blends 3 modes. It is not pure theory, since the lab hours and the submission dominate, and with no organisation placement it is not an internship. Reading a course's delivery line tells you what your week will look like.
Think first
Why mix at all?
Think first: why might a blend of modes teach a skill better than any single mode alone?
Show the answer
Because a skill has a knowing part and a doing part. Theory supplies the map: names, concepts, the why. Practice builds the hands: speed, muscle memory, error recovery. A project or field component proves it end to end on something real. Pure theory never becomes ability; pure doing without concepts plateaus early. The strongest courses give you the map, then the miles.
Watch out
Reading the label wrong
Two traps. First, judging effort by lecture count: 'hardly any classes, must be light' usually means the work happens in labs, fields or projects instead. Second, skipping non-lecture sessions as optional: in a skill course the practical hours are the course, and attendance and work logs there usually feed your internal marks (your institute sets the exact split).
Theory
Use this when choosing
When the basket list goes up, read each course's delivery line first: it is a preview of your week. Prefer the blend that suits how you learn and what the skill demands. The same 5-word vocabulary (theory, practical, fieldwork, internship, project) reappears in your VAC (BCA307) and again in the project semesters ahead.
Summary
Key takeaways
- SEC delivery: any one or combination of theory, practical, fieldwork, internship, project.
- The blend fits the skill; the 2 credits and evaluation pattern stay the same.
- Combinations are normal: concepts + lab + project is a classic shape.
- Non-lecture hours are the core of a skill course, not an optional extra.
- Read the delivery line before picking a course; it previews your week.
- Memory hook: 5 vehicles, one destination, and the skill decides the ride.
