Basic building blocks of an IoT device

કોઈપણ IoT device ખોલો તો તમને એ જ પાંચ-છ blocks મળશે: controller (brain), sensing અને actuation (senses અને hands), communication module (voice), memory અને power source, અને દરેક તમે પહેલેથી ઓળખતા function સાથે જોડાયેલો.

Theory

Gate controller ખોલો

SmartHostel નું gate controller એક નાનું sealed box છે. એને ખોલો, અને brand ગમે તે હોય, તમને એ જ handful of parts મળશે, કારણ કે EVERY IoT device એ જ building blocks થી બને છે.

આ પાઠની ભેટ એ universality છે: આ 5 (અથવા 6) blocks એક વાર શીખી લો અને smartwatch થી લઈને smart city sensor સુધી બનેલા કોઈપણ IoT device ની anatomy વાંચી શકશો. દરેક block તમે પહેલેથી ભણેલા function સાથે map થાય છે: આ નવી theory નહીં, પરંતુ assembly છે.

Theory

Blocks માં data કેવી રીતે flow થાય છે

Blocks random pile નથી; તે device ની અંદર PIPELINE બનાવે છે:

Sensing reading મેળવે છે → controller એ reading ને પોતાની logic સામે process કરે છે (memory વાપરીને) → controller result ને communication દ્વારા બહાર મોકલે છે અથવા actuation trigger કરે છે → અને power source આ બધું ચલાવે છે.

Gate માટે: sensor ID વાંચે છે (sensing) → controller stored list સામે એને check કરે છે (processing + memory) → valid હોય તો motor ચલાવે છે (actuation) અને server પર entry log કરે છે (communication) → mains power આખું cycle ચલાવે છે. દરેક block એક જ pass માં પોતાનું સ્થાન સાબિત કરે છે.

4-versus-6 counting note

Textbooks આ blocks ને થોડા અલગ રીતે ગણે છે, અને તમે consistent રહો તો exam માં એ સ્વીકાર્ય છે:

  • કેટલાક 6 list કરે છે: controller, sensing, actuation, communication, memory, power
  • કેટલાક sensing + actuation ને એક I/O interfaces block તરીકે group કરે છે, એટલે 5 થાય છે
  • કેટલાક memory ને controller માં fold કરે છે, એટલે 4 core blocks થાય છે

Safe approach: full 6 રજૂ કરો અને common grouping નો ઉલ્લેખ કરો. મહત્વ એ છે કે તમે FUNCTIONS ના નામ કહી શકો: brain, senses, hands, voice, memory અને power; કોઈ ચોક્કસ book એને કેવી રીતે bundle કરે એ અલગ બાબત છે.

Controller / processing unit (microcontroller અથવા microprocessor)

Controller/processing unit brain છે: એ logic ચલાવે છે અને sensing, actuation, communication તથા memory ને coordinate કરે છે: બીજું કોઈ decision લેતું નથી. Communication module (option A) VOICE છે: એ data carry કરે છે, decisions લેતું નથી. Power source (option C) essential છે પરંતુ passive છે: એ energy આપે છે, coordinate કરતું નથી. Sensor (option D) SENSE છે, જે brain ને input આપે છે, direction આપતું નથી. Architecture lesson ની role-clarity જેવી જ વાત છે: દરેક block નું એક કામ હોય છે અને coordination માત્ર controller નું છે: Raspberry Pi અને Arduino બંને આ જ આપે છે, અલગ રીતે.

એક block કાઢો, device તોડી નાખો

Battery-powered room sensor node માટે કલ્પના કરો કે તમે દરેક block એક પછી એક remove કરો છો. કયા એક block ને remove કરવું સૌથી catastrophic છે, અને node કયા block ની LIMITS થી સૌથી વધારે defined છે? Reason કરો, પછી tap કરો.

Controller remove કરો એટલે device dead છે: કંઈ sensor વાંચતું નથી, data format કરતું નથી કે radio ચલાવતું નથી: brain non-negotiable છે (sense-only node માં ACTUATION ન હોય તો ચાલે, એટલે એ optional હોઈ શકે; controller ક્યારેય નહીં). Node ની LIMITS સૌથી વધારે જે block નક્કી કરે છે તે power source છે: battery budget નક્કી કરે છે કે node કેટલી વાર transmit કરી શકે, કયો protocol afford કરી શકે (WiFi નહીં, LR-WPAN), અને કેટલો સમય જીવશે: પાછલા પાઠનો resource constraint અહીં એક block માં localised થાય છે. Brain essential, power decisive: આ pair મુખ્ય insight છે.

Watch out

Building-block slips

Components ના નામ, blocks ના નહીં: Exam માં FUNCTIONAL blocks (controller, communication...) જોઈએ, "wire, chip, battery" નહીં; roles ના નામ આપો.

Power ભૂલી જવું: Power source first-class block છે અને ઘણી વાર design ની tightest limit હોય છે; ક્યારેય omit ન કરો.

Controller ને communication સાથે confuse કરવું: Brain decision લે છે, radio data carry કરે છે: અલગ blocks, અલગ jobs.

Rigid count: Grouping પ્રમાણે 4, 5 અથવા 6; એક number પર insist કરવાને બદલે full set અને grouping કહો.

બે boards, same blocks, અલગ balance

દરેક IoT device માં આ blocks હોય છે; difference એ છે કે એ કેવી રીતે આપવામાં આવે છે. આગામી 2 lessons માં students build કરતા બે boards મળશે: Raspberry Pi, એક નાનું full COMPUTER (powerful controller, OS ચલાવે, rich memory અને connectivity), અને Arduino, tiny MICROCONTROLLER board (minimal, real-time, ultra-low-power). Same building blocks, opposite trade-offs: unit ને close કરતી comparison માટે આ તૈયારી છે.
