IoT device એ brain અપાયેલી વસ્તુ છે: એ sense કરે છે, process કરે છે, communicate કરે છે અને ઘણી વાર act પણ કરે છે, unique identity સાથે: physical unit જ્યાં sensor, actuator અને network મળે છે.

Theory

અત્યાર સુધીની દરેક વસ્તુ જ્યાં એક બને છે

ત્રણ units પછી તમારી પાસે pieces છે: perceive કરતા sensors, act કરતા actuators, connect કરતા protocols અને process કરતું embedded brain. પરંતુ bench પર પડેલા pieces system નથી.

IoT device એ જગ્યા છે જ્યાં આ pieces ONE addressable unit બને છે: SmartHostel નું gate controller આવતા વ્યક્તિને sense કરે છે, તે authorised છે કે નહીં decide કરે છે, server પર log કરે છે અને barrier ખોલે છે: sense, process, communicate, act, અને એ પણ પોતાની identity ધરાવતા એક board માં.

આ પાઠ આ unit ને define કરે છે; બાકીનો unit એને build કરે છે.

IoT device, ઔપચારિક રીતે

IoT device એ unique identity ધરાવતી physical object છે જે:

  • sensors દ્વારા પોતાનું environment sense કરે છે
  • controller/brain દ્વારા data process કરે છે
  • radio/interface દ્વારા network પર communicate કરે છે
  • અને ઘણી વાર world પર actuate કરે છે

આ અત્યાર સુધીની દરેક વસ્તુનું meeting point છે: Unit 3 ના sensors અને actuators, Unit 1 ની connectivity અને Unit 2 નું embedded-system brain. આ બધું એક એવી thing માં fuse થાય છે જેને individually address અને control કરી શકાય છે: unique-identity characteristic નું physical સ્વરૂપ.

Theory

Defining constraint: resource-limited

IoT devices ને અલગ પ્રકારનું computer બનાવતી બાબત એ છે જે તેમની પાસે LACK હોય છે: મોટાભાગનાં resource-constrained હોય છે: limited processing, small memory અને tight power budget, ઘણી વાર battery.

આ constraint footnote નથી; એ આખા field ને SHAPE કરે છે. તેથી IoT low-power protocols (LR-WPAN), compressed addressing (6LoWPAN), lightweight messaging (MQTT) અને efficient embedded code તરફ જાય છે. Hostel sensor laptop નું software ચલાવી શકતું નથી; constraint ની WITHIN design કરવી જ craft છે.

આગળ આવતા Raspberry Pi અને Arduino આ constraint spectrum ના બે અલગ points પર છે: એક small computer, એક tiny controller.

Defining trait scarcity છે: limited processing, memory અને ઘણી વાર battery power. આ દરેક design choice માં દેખાય છે: low-power protocols, compressed addressing અને lightweight code. Option A reality ને invert કરે છે: IoT devices સામાન્ય રીતે laptop કરતાં FAR ઓછા powerful હોય છે, અને ઈરાદાપૂર્વક આવા હોય છે: cheap, low-power અને many. Option C definition સાથે conflict કરે છે: communication IoT નું core છે. Option D ખોટું છે: દરેક IoT device પાસે controller/processor brain તરીકે હોય છે. Constraint ની WITHIN design કરવી જ આખી discipline છે.

શું gateway પણ IoT device છે?

Hallway hub temperature sense કરતું નથી કે valves ખોલતું નથી: એ ફક્ત room nodes પાસેથી data collect કરીને cloud પર forward કરે છે. શું એ IoT device ગણાય? Definition પરથી દલીલ કરો, પછી tap કરો.

હા, GATEWAY role માં. એની unique identity હોય છે, એ data process કરે છે (aggregate, filter અને કદાચ LR-WPAN sensor network અને internet વચ્ચે protocols translate કરે છે) અને communicate કરે છે. એ sensing/actuating કરતાં communicate-and-process abilities પર વધુ ભાર મૂકે છે. Gateways મહત્વના છે કારણ કે tiny constrained sensor nodes ઘણી વાર સીધા internet સુધી પહોંચી શકતા નથી; gateway તેમનું bridge છે. એ nodes સાથે 6LoWPAN અને cloud સાથે WiFi/cellular બોલી શકે છે. એટલે IoT devices roles ના spectrum માં આવે છે: pure sensor node થી full device થી gateway સુધી, identity, processing અને communication થી united.

IoT-device slips

"IoT device = sensor": Sensor એક COMPONENT છે; device આખું unit છે: brain + sensor + radio + power. ક્યારેક sensor જ ન હોય, જેમ actuator node અથવા gateway.

Constraint ignore કરવી: Resource-limited હોવું defining feature છે; એને skip કરવાથી IoT design ordinary computing થી કેમ અલગ છે એ ચૂકી જશો.

Unique identity ભૂલી જવી: Address ન કરી શકાય એવી thing ને individually query કે control કરી શકતા નથી; identity definition નો ભાગ છે.

હવે તમને ખબર છે કે IoT device WHAT છે; next lesson એને ખોલીને દરેકમાં આવતા 5 અથવા 6 BUILDING BLOCKS જોઈશું: controller, sensing/actuation, communication, memory અને power. પછી બે lessons students ખરેખર build કરતા બે boards ને મળશે: Raspberry Pi (small computer) અને Arduino (tiny controller). અંતે comparison નક્કી કરશે કે તમારા project માં કયું વાપરવું.
