2 teams के बारे में 4 सवाल

मान लीजिए आपकी class में एक cricket team A है और एक football team B है। अब 4 messages भेजने हैं:

1. Sports day का notice: दोनों में से किसी भी team का हर player

2. Double-training का alert: वो players जो दोनों teams में हैं

3. Cricket-only meeting: जो A में है पर B में नहीं

4. Non-cricketers का slot: वो सब जो A के बाहर हैं

देखिए, आपने अभी चारों set operations use कर लिए। अब हम इन्हें symbols और rules देते हैं।

Union और intersection

पूरे टॉपिक में एक ही example लेकर चलते हैं: A = {1, 2, 3}, B = {3, 4, 5}.

  • Union A ∪ B: वो elements जो A में हैं या B में हैं या दोनों में हैं → {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
  • Intersection A ∩ B: वो elements जो दोनों में हैं → {3}

एक बात notice कीजिए, 3 union में सिर्फ एक बार आया, क्योंकि set में कभी repeat नहीं होता। Venn diagram में union दोनों circles को shade करता है, और intersection सिर्फ बीच का overlap वाला हिस्सा shade करता है।

Difference और complement

वही A और B लेते हैं:

  • Difference A − B: जो A में है पर B में नहीं → {1, 2}
  • B − A = {4, 5}, ये तो बिलकुल अलग set है! मतलब difference commutative नहीं है।

Complement के लिए पहले एक universal set U fix करना पड़ता है (मतलब जिस दायरे की हम बात कर रहे हैं, उसका सब कुछ)। फिर A′ का मतलब है U का वो सब कुछ जो A में नहीं है। जैसे U = {1, 2, ..., 8} और A = {1, 2, 3} हो, तो A′ = {4, 5, 6, 7, 8}।

A से शुरू कीजिए और जो भी B में भी है उसे हटा दीजिए: सिर्फ common 3 निकलता है, तो {1, 2} बचता है। {4, 5} तो B − A है, ये direction वाली classic गलती है। {3} intersection है, और {1, 2, 4, 5} symmetric difference है, ये दोनों अलग सवाल हैं।

Complement में हमेशा पहले U fix करना ज़रूरी है। अगर universe पता ही न हो, तो "not even" में letters, लोग, कुछ भी आ सकता है। Exam में कभी कभी trick यही होती है कि U साफ साफ नहीं बताते; इसलिए हमेशा पहले U लिख लीजिए।

वो laws जो आम algebra जैसे लगते हैं

किसी भी sets A, B, C के लिए:

  • Commutative: A ∪ B = B ∪ A और A ∩ B = B ∩ A
  • Associative: (A ∪ B) ∪ C = A ∪ (B ∪ C), और ∩ के साथ भी यही
  • Distributive: A ∩ (B ∪ C) = (A ∩ B) ∪ (A ∩ C), और इसका mirror जिसमें ∪ बाहर हो

मोटी बात यूँ समझ लीजिए: ∪ थोड़ा + जैसा behave करता है और ∩ थोड़ा × जैसा, बस फर्क ये है कि sets में distribution दोनों directions में चलता है।

Ø, U और खुद A से जुड़े laws

  • Identity: A ∪ Ø = A और A ∩ U = A (कुछ न जोड़ो, या सब कुछ से filter करो, कुछ नहीं बदलता)
  • Domination: A ∪ U = U और A ∩ Ø = Ø
  • Idempotent: A ∪ A = A और A ∩ A = A
  • Complement: A ∪ A′ = U, A ∩ A′ = Ø, और (A′)′ = A

हर एक law अगर आप शब्दों में बोलकर देखेंगे तो obvious लगेगा। एक बार बोलकर समझ लीजिए, फिर इन्हें रटने की कभी ज़रूरत नहीं पड़ेगी।

De Morgan's laws, exam के असली stars

(A ∪ B)′ = A′ ∩ B′ और (A ∩ B)′ = A′ ∪ B′

शब्दों में कहें तो: NOT (cricket या football) का मतलब है NOT cricket और NOT football. दोनों को मना करना है, सिर्फ एक को नहीं।

Mechanical तरीके से देखिए: जब complement bracket के अंदर घुसता है, तो हर ∪, ∩ बन जाता है और हर ∩, ∪ बन जाता है, और हर set को अपना अलग complement मिल जाता है।

A′ ∩ B′

Complement हर set पर distribute होता है और साथ में operation भी flip होता है: (A ∪ B)′ = A′ ∩ B′. Option A में union वैसा ही रह गया, ये De Morgan की सबसे common गलती है। Party वाला version याद रखिए: not (चाय या coffee) का मतलब है न चाय और न coffee.

2 quick checks जो ज़्यादातर गलतियाँ पकड़ लेते हैं

पहला: union कभी अपने किसी भी set से छोटा नहीं हो सकता, और intersection कभी बड़ा नहीं हो सकता। अगर आपका answer ये rule तोड़ रहा है, तो दुबारा calculate कीजिए। दूसरा: De Morgan's लगाते वक्त, अगर आपने ∪ को ∩ में (या उल्टा) flip नहीं किया, तो गलत किया; flip करना ही तो law है।

SQL का OR, AND और NOT बिलकुल इन्हीं laws को follow करते हैं, और query optimisers conditions को rewrite करने के लिए De Morgan's use करते हैं। Probability का addition rule भी unions और intersections पर ही टिका है। और आगे जो Boolean Algebra unit आएगा, वो यही law-set है, बस U की जगह 1 और Ø की जगह 0 होता है।
