Operation and its properties

Union, intersection, difference અને complement આ 4 operations sets ને combine કરીને નવા sets બનાવે છે, અને algebra જેવા થોડાક laws (ખાસ કરીને De Morgan's) કોઈ પણ set expression ને simplify કરવામાં મદદ કરે છે.

2 teams વિશે 4 સવાલ

ધારો કે તમારા class માં એક cricket team A છે અને એક football team B છે. હવે તમારે 4 messages મોકલવાના છે:

1. Sports day notice: બેમાંથી કોઈ પણ team માં હોય એ બધાને

2. Double-training alert: બંને teams માં હોય એવા players ને

3. Cricket-only meeting: A માં હોય પણ B માં નહીં

4. Non-cricketers' slot: A ની બહાર હોય એ બધાને

જુઓ, અહીં તમે ચારેય set operations વાપરી નાખી! હવે આપણે એમને symbols અને rules આપીશું.

Union અને intersection

આખા topic માટે એક example લઈ લઈએ: A = {1, 2, 3}, B = {3, 4, 5}.

  • Union A ∪ B: જે elements A માં હોય, અથવા B માં હોય, અથવા બંનેમાં હોય → {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
  • Intersection A ∩ B: જે બંનેમાં હોય → {3}

એક વાત ધ્યાનમાં રાખો: union માં 3 એક જ વાર આવે છે, કારણ કે set માં ક્યારેય repetition હોતું નથી. Venn diagram માં જુઓ તો union બંને circles shade કરે છે, અને intersection ફક્ત overlap વાળો ભાગ shade કરે છે.

Difference અને complement

એ જ A અને B લઈએ:

  • Difference A − B: A માં હોય પણ B માં ન હોય → {1, 2}
  • B − A = {4, 5}, જુઓ આ તો સાવ જુદો set થઈ ગયો! એટલે difference commutative નથી.

હવે complement માટે પહેલાં એક universal set U નક્કી કરવો પડે (એટલે કે અત્યારે આપણી ચર્ચામાં જે કંઈ છે એ બધું). પછી A′ એટલે U માંનું બધું જે A માં નથી. ધારો U = {1, 2, ..., 8} અને A = {1, 2, 3}: તો A′ = {4, 5, 6, 7, 8}.

A થી શરૂ કરો અને એમાંથી જે B માં પણ હોય એ કાઢી નાખો: ફક્ત common વાળો 3 જતો રહે, એટલે {1, 2} બચે. {4, 5} તો B − A છે, direction ઊંધી લગાડવાની આ સૌથી common ભૂલ. {3} એ intersection છે, અને {1, 2, 4, 5} એ symmetric difference છે, બંને સાવ જુદા સવાલ.

E′ = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9}: એટલે U માંનું બધું જે even નથી, બીજા શબ્દોમાં U ના odd numbers.

Complement માટે હંમેશાં પહેલાં U fix કરવો જ પડે. Universe ખબર જ ન હોય તો "even નથી" માં તો letters, people, ગમે તે આવી શકે. Exam માં ક્યારેક U સ્પષ્ટ ન લખીને trick છુપાવેલી હોય; એટલે તમે પહેલાં U લખી નાખો.

એવા laws જે સાદા algebra જેવા લાગે

કોઈ પણ sets A, B, C માટે:

  • Commutative: A ∪ B = B ∪ A અને A ∩ B = B ∩ A
  • Associative: (A ∪ B) ∪ C = A ∪ (B ∪ C), એ જ ∩ માટે પણ
  • Distributive: A ∩ (B ∪ C) = (A ∩ B) ∪ (A ∩ C), અને એનું mirror જેમાં ∪ બહાર હોય

સાદી સમજ: ∪ ને + જેવો ગણો અને ∩ ને × જેવો, ફરક એટલો કે sets માં distribution બંને directions માં ચાલે.

Ø, U અને A પોતે એની સાથે જોડાયેલા laws

  • Identity: A ∪ Ø = A અને A ∩ U = A (કંઈ ન ઉમેરો, અથવા બધા વડે filter કરો, કંઈ બદલાતું નથી)
  • Domination: A ∪ U = U અને A ∩ Ø = Ø
  • Idempotent: A ∪ A = A અને A ∩ A = A
  • Complement: A ∪ A′ = U, A ∩ A′ = Ø, અને (A′)′ = A

એક એક ને શબ્દોમાં બોલી જુઓ, દરેક વાત આપોઆપ સાચી લાગશે. એક વાર એમ કરી લો પછી ગોખવાની જરૂર જ નહીં પડે.

(A ∪ B)′ = A′ ∩ B′ અને (A ∩ B)′ = A′ ∪ B′

શબ્દોમાં: NOT (cricket or football) એટલે NOT cricket અને NOT football. બંનેની ના, ફક્ત એકની નહીં.

Mechanically યાદ રાખો: જ્યારે complement bracket ની અંદર જાય, ત્યારે દરેક ∪ એ ∩ થઈ જાય અને દરેક ∩ એ ∪ થઈ જાય, અને દરેક set ને પોતાનું complement મળે.

A′ ∩ B′

Complement દરેક set પર distribute થાય છે AND operation ઊંધું થાય છે: (A ∪ B)′ = A′ ∩ B′. Option A માં union એમનું એમ રહી ગયું છે, જે De Morgan's ની સૌથી common ભૂલ છે. Party વાળી version યાદ કરો: not (tea or coffee) એટલે ન chai, ન coffee.

2 sanity checks જે મોટા ભાગની ભૂલો પકડી પાડે

પહેલું: union ક્યારેય એના કોઈ પણ set કરતાં નાનું ન હોઈ શકે, અને intersection ક્યારેય મોટું ન હોઈ શકે. જો તમારો answer આ તોડે, તો ફરી ગણો. બીજું: De Morgan's લગાડતી વખતે જો તમે ∪ ને ∩ (કે ઊંધું) flip ન કર્યું, તો ખોટું જ કર્યું છે; આ flip એ જ તો law છે.

SQL ના OR, AND અને NOT આ જ laws ને follow કરે છે, અને query optimisers conditions ને rewrite કરવા De Morgan's વાપરે છે. Probability નો addition rule પણ unions અને intersections પર જ ટકેલો છે. અને આગળ આવનારો Boolean Algebra unit પણ આ જ law-set છે, ફક્ત U ને બદલે 1 અને Ø ને બદલે 0.
