पतली copper की सड़कें
shop पर वापस, Chirag एक motherboard को light की तरफ झुकाकर देखता है। CPU socket और RAM slots के बीच बालों जितनी पतली सैकड़ों copper lines फैली हुई हैं।
"RAM यहाँ है," वो कहता है, "processor वहाँ है, बस 2 सेंटीमीटर दूर। आपके लिए एक सवाल: जब CPU को RAM में stored कोई एक number चाहिए, तो वो request असल में physically जाती कैसे है?"
इन्हीं copper lines के रास्ते। इन्हें buses कहते हैं, और ये 4 तरह के होते हैं, हर एक का बस एक ही काम है।

एक courier delivery
किसी भी courier delivery के लिए 4 चीज़ें चाहिए: address slip (कहाँ जाना है), खुद parcel (क्या भेजा जा रहा है), instructions (bell बजाओ, signature लो, receipt वापस लाओ), और van के लिए fuel। अब इन्हें बदल दीजिए: address bus, data bus, control bus, power bus। एक delivery, 4 अलग-अलग roles, और ये कभी आपस में mix नहीं होने चाहिए।

Width क्यों मायने रखती है
एक bus असल में parallel lines का एक bundle होता है, और lines की संख्या ही उसकी width है।
- 32 lines चौड़ा data bus एक बार में 32 bits ले जाता है; 64 lines हों तो हर trip में double।
- n lines चौड़ा address bus 2ⁿ अलग-अलग locations को point कर सकता है। 32 lines के साथ: 2³² addresses, यानी करीब 4 GB जितना।
यही आखिरी बात वजह है कि पुराने 32-bit computers 4 GB से ज़्यादा RAM use नहीं कर पाते थे, और shop पर एक customer के असली सवाल का यही असली जवाब है।

Address bus
सिर्फ CPU ही addresses announce करता है; memory कभी वापस address नहीं भेजती, इसलिए address bus एक ही दिशा में चलता है, CPU → memory। Data bus को two-way होना ही पड़ता है (reading में data अंदर आता है, writing में बाहर जाता है)। ये one-way/two-way की जोड़ी exams में सबसे बार-बार पूछा जाने वाला bus सवाल है।

Read और write। Reading में data memory से CPU में आता है; writing में CPU से result memory में जाता है। वही wires, दोनों दिशाएँ। और control bus ही बताता है कि इन दोनों में से क्या हो रहा है, अपने read/write signal से, ताकि memory को पता चले कि उसे बोलना है या सुनना।

जहाँ marks कटते हैं
directions को उलट देना: "address bus is bidirectional" लिख देना classic गलती है। इसे पक्का याद रखिए: addresses सिर्फ CPU ही announce करता है, इसलिए one-way; data दोनों तरफ बहता है, इसलिए two-way। दूसरी गलती: width को "speed" कह देना। Width का मतलब है हर trip में कितने bits जाते हैं, ये नहीं कि trips कितनी तेज़ होती हैं।
