Probability theory: basic probability concepts

Theory

एक die 6-chit drum है (3 even chits: P = 3/6)। एक card deck 52-chit drum है (4 kings: P = 4/52)। Survey pile 60-chit drum है (24 hosteller chits: P = 0.4)।

Theory

Vocabulary, formally

Classical probability (equally likely outcomes):

P(E) = favourable outcomes ÷ total outcomes

Theory

Complement: P(not E) = 1 - P(E)। P(no six) = 1 - 1/6 = 5/6।

Addition: P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A and B)।

Multiplication (independent events): P(A and B) = P(A) × P(B), जब एक outcome दूसरे के बारे में कुछ नहीं बताता: दो coins, P(two heads) = 1/2 × 1/2 = 1/4।

Think first

Overlap

कागज़ पर P(king OR heart) compute कीजिए, addition rule इस्तेमाल करते हुए: kings गिनिए, hearts गिनिए, overlap गिनिए। फिर tap कीजिए।

Show the answer

P(king) = 4/52। P(heart) = 13/52। Overlap: king of hearts,

P(king or heart) = 4/52 + 13/52 - 1/52 = 16/52 = 4/13।

Direct count से sanity check: 13 hearts plus 3 non-heart kings = 16 favourable chits।

Quiz

P(hosteller OR Year 2) = ?

  1. (24 + 30 - 12)/60 = 42/60 = 0.7
  2. (24 + 30)/60 = 54/60 = 0.9
  3. 24/60 × 30/60 = 0.2
  4. 12/60 = 0.2
Show the answer

(24 + 30 - 12)/60 = 42/60 = 0.7

Watch out

Theory

Summary

Key takeaways

  • Complement: P(not E) = 1 - P(E)।
  • Addition: P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A and B); mutually exclusive events के लिए overlap = 0।
  • Independent events के लिए multiplication: P(A and B) = P(A) × P(B); tosses की कोई memory नहीं।
  • Equally likely नहीं? Observed relative frequency (empirical probability) इस्तेमाल कीजिए।
  • Memory hook: एक fair lottery drum: celebrate-chits over total chits।
