Theory
A course you attend on a mat
Some VACs meet on yoga mats at 7 in the morning. Some walk a lakeside counting waste. Some sit in a classroom discussing how the Constitution shapes daily life, and end with a small project.
All of them are legitimate 2-credit courses, and none of them look alike.
That variety is not looseness. It is the delivery rule doing its job: let the area decide the shape.
Theory
Form follows function
A gym, a library and an open-air amphitheatre are all buildings, but their shapes differ because what happens inside differs. VAC delivery works the same way: a wellness course must be practised, an environmental course must be witnessed in the field, a civic course must be discussed. The content dictates the architecture.
Theory
The rule, plainly
BCA307 may be delivered through any one, or any combination, of Theory, Practical, Fieldwork, Internship and Project: the same 5-mode vocabulary you met in BCA306.
The blend follows the area: practice-heavy for wellness, field-heavy for environment, discussion-and-project for civic and cultural themes. Whatever the mix, the frame is unchanged: 2 credits, institute-level evaluation.
At a glance
Same 5 modes as your SEC, wearing VAC clothes.
| Mode | In a VAC it can look like |
|---|---|
| Theory | Discussions and sessions on constitutional values or knowledge traditions |
| Practical | Guided yoga or wellness practice, session by session |
| Fieldwork | A waste audit or water study around your own area |
| Internship | Time with an organisation such as an environmental or community body, where offered |
| Project | A campus energy audit, an awareness campaign, a documented study |
Quiz
An environmental education VAC has 6 classroom sessions, a lakeside field visit, and a submitted report. Its delivery is:
- Invalid, because a VAC must be theory only
- An internship
- Theory + fieldwork + project, a valid combination
- Practical only
Show the answer
Theory + fieldwork + project, a valid combination
Any one or a combination of the 5 modes is allowed, and this course blends 3 of them: sessions, a field visit and a report. A VAC is certainly not restricted to theory. No organisation placement means it is not an internship, and the blend is broader than practical alone. As with your SEC, the delivery line previews your week.
Think first
Why yoga cannot be a lecture course
Think first: why does a Health & Wellness or yoga VAC almost force practical delivery?
Show the answer
Because its intended outcome is a practice, not information. Wellness lives in the body and the routine: posture, breath, consistency. Notes about yoga leave you exactly as flexible as before. So the sessions themselves are the content, and attendance at practice is not a formality but the very thing being taught. The same logic gives environmental courses their field visits: some things must be done or seen, not merely read.
Watch out
The skipped-session trap
The mark-losing habit is treating non-lecture components as optional: missing practice sessions, skipping the field visit, borrowing someone's report. In a VAC those components usually carry both the learning and the internal evaluation (your institute announces the exact split). Skip them and you lose the marks and the point in one stroke.
Theory
Use the delivery line when choosing
Before picking from the basket, read each course's delivery blend: a 7 am practice course and an evening discussion course place very different demands on your week. The 5-mode vocabulary now covers both your Semester 3 framework subjects, and it returns in the project semesters ahead.
Summary
Key takeaways
- VAC delivery: any one or combination of theory, practical, fieldwork, internship, project.
- The area shapes the blend: wellness leans practical, environment leans fieldwork, civic themes lean theory + project.
- The 2 credits and institute-level 50/50 evaluation are unchanged by the blend.
- Practice and field components carry the learning and usually the internal marks; never treat them as optional.
- Read a course's delivery line before choosing it from the basket.
- Memory hook: mats, riverbanks and classrooms all count; the area decides the shape.
