બે resumes, એક phone call
Surat ની એક IT firm લગભગ સરખા marks ધરાવતા final-year ના બે students ને shortlist કરે છે. એક resume માં ભણેલા subjects ની યાદી છે. બીજા resume માં કરેલા કામોની યાદી છે: એક દુકાન માટે બનાવેલો Excel dashboard, service centre માં વિતાવેલો એક મહિનો, spoken-English certificate, અને તૈયાર કરીને આપેલી નાની website.
એક phone વાગે છે.
આ બે resumes વચ્ચેનો તફાવત જ એ gap છે જેને SEC series પૂરો કરવા માટે બનાવવામાં આવી છે, અને BCA306 પોતાના aims સ્પષ્ટ રીતે જણાવે છે.

Recipe અને cooking
Theory subjects તમને recipes આપે છે: ચોક્કસ, પરીક્ષામાં પૂછાય તેવી અને જરૂરી. પરંતુ કોઈ cook ને recipes બોલી સંભળાવવા માટે નોકરી આપતું નથી; લોકો dal ચાખે છે. Skill એટલે એવી theory જેને practice માં પકવવામાં આવી હોય: real tools અને real tasks સાથે એટલી practice કે customer સામે પણ એ કામ કરે. SEC નો સમય એટલે kitchen નો સમય.

SEC કયા હેતુ તરફ આગળ વધે છે?
BCA306 ના જણાવેલા aims:
- Practical skills: tool અથવા task વડે બતાવી શકાય એવી ability, માત્ર સમજાવી શકાય એવી નહીં.
- Embedded internship: course structure ની અંદર સામેલ કરવામાં આવેલું real work.
- Hands-on training: keyboard, machine અથવા field site પર જાતે કામ કરીને શીખવું.
- Soft skills: communication, teamwork, time management અને presentation.
- Employability: ઉપરની બધી બાબતોનો સરવાળો, તમને hire કરવા યોગ્ય બનાવતી ability.
એક વાક્યમાં: SEC marks ને ability માં ફેરવે છે.

Non-technical customer ને તમારો project સ્પષ્ટ રીતે સમજાવવો
Soft skills એવી transferable abilities છે જે દરેક job માં તમારી સાથે રહે છે: communication, teamwork અને time management. Technical વાતને non-technical વ્યક્તિને સમજાવવી એ તેનું classic ઉદાહરણ છે. બાકીની ત્રણ technical (hard) skills છે: valuable છે, પરંતુ ચોક્કસ tools સાથે જોડાયેલી છે. Employers બંને પ્રકારની skills ચકાસે છે, તેથી SEC soft skills ને explicit aim તરીકે ગણે છે.

Semester 3 માં આવા ઘણા candidates છે: BCA305 માં તમે બનાવી રહ્યા છો તે FestConnect site અથવા app, BCA303 નું ResultDesk-style Python + SQLite tool, BCA302 માં R વડે કરેલું survey analysis, અને BCA306 પોતે, એટલે કે તમારો પસંદ કરેલો skill course અથવા internship. Marks કહે છે કે તમે ભણ્યા; આ વસ્તુઓ કહે છે કે તમે કંઈક બનાવ્યું. Employability મોટાભાગે આવા evidence ના વધતા જતા સંગ્રહનું નામ છે, અને SEC એ ખાતરી કરે છે કે આ સંગ્રહ દરેક semester માં વધતો રહે.

Certificate collector
ફાંદો એ છે કે કેટલાક લોકો stamps ભેગા કરે તેમ certificates ભેગા કરે છે: 5 courses પૂરા, પરંતુ બતાવી શકાય એવું કંઈ નહીં. Interviewer કહે કે 'મને બતાવો' અને આખો સંગ્રહ ધરાશાયી થઈ જાય. ઓછી વસ્તુઓ પસંદ કરો અને તેમને બતાવી શકાય તેવા level સુધી લઈ જાઓ: ખોલી શકાય એવી file, live કરી શકાય એવું task, અથવા real customer વિશે કહી શકાય એવી story. જે skill તમે બતાવી શકો તે એવી 5 skills કરતાં વધુ મૂલ્યવાન છે જેને તમે ફક્ત નામથી ઓળખાવી શકો.

તમારી degree માં ચાલતો ધાગો
Semester 1 થી તમે આ track પર છો: BCA106 એ તમને તમારા family ના Excel person બનાવ્યા, BCA206 એ website તમારા હાથમાં મૂકી, અને હવે BCA306 તમને આગળની skill પસંદ કરવાની તક આપે છે. આ બધું Semester 5 અને 6 ના project work તથા placement season માં compound થાય છે. દરેક SEC ને એ વ્યક્તિમાં કરેલું એક વિચારપૂર્વકનું investment માનો જેને interviewer મળવાનો છે.
