The Chinese whispers experiment

एक principal peon को बोलता है: "exams postponed by two days." Peon clerk को बताता है, clerk teacher को, teacher class को... और class तक पहुँचते-पहुँचते बात बन जाती है "exams cancelled"।

अब सोचिए, अगर principal यही बात एक group में डाल देता जहाँ सब सीधे पढ़ लेते, तो? Flow का shape अलग, और result भी बिल्कुल अलग।

इन shapes के नाम होते हैं, और organisations इन्हें सोच-समझकर चुनती हैं।

Messages के लिए road maps

Message flow को आप city traffic की तरह समझिए। कुछ cities में सारा traffic एक central square से गुजारना पड़ता है (यानी सब कुछ boss के through)। कुछ में बस एक लंबा highway होता है (rank by rank)। कुछ में ring road होते हैं जहाँ हर junction अपने 2 पड़ोसियों से जुड़ा रहता है। Layout ही तय करता है speed, jams, और flow पर control किसका है, चाहे roads हों या messages।

What a communication network is

एक communication network वो pattern है जो दिखाता है कि organisation में कौन किससे सीधे communicate कर सकता है।

हर exam में 5 classic patterns आते हैं: chain, wheel, Y, circle, all-channel। हर एक 4 चीज़ों में अलग-अलग trade-off करता है: speed, accuracy, leader का control, और member satisfaction। हर shape को एक strength और एक weakness के साथ याद कर लीजिए, फिर वो question आपका पक्का है।

  • Chain: information hierarchy में rank by rank चलती है।

GM → Manager → Supervisor → Worker

Orderly है और authority को respect करती है, पर slow है, और हर hop पर message distort हो सकता है (वही whispers वाली problem)।

  • Wheel: एक central person सबसे जुड़ा होता है; members आपस में बात नहीं करते।

Decisions के लिए सबसे fast, hub पर maximum control, पर members को left out feel होता है, और hub overload भी हो सकता है।

सब कुछ hub से गुजरता है, इसलिए hub अगर overloaded हो, absent हो या biased हो, तो पूरी team फँस जाती है, ठीक उसी वजह से engineers networks में single points of failure से डरते हैं। हर level पर distortion CHAIN की weakness है, और सबके एक साथ बोलने से जो noise आती है वो all-channel की बात है।

Y, circle and all-channel

  • Y: बीच में एक person upward और downward branches को जोड़ता है, थोड़ा chain, थोड़ा wheel। ये तब common है जब कोई supervisor workers और management के बीच bridge बनता है।
  • Circle: हर member बिल्कुल 2 पड़ोसियों से बात करता है; equal तो है पर slow, messages ring के चारों तरफ धीरे-धीरे घूमते हैं।
  • All-channel: हर कोई हर किसी से बात करता है। सबसे ज़्यादा participation, creativity और satisfaction; पर सबसे noisy भी, और coordination ना हो तो बस chatter में बिखर जाता है।

Brainstorming: all-channel, हर idea को सबके साथ bounce होना चाहिए, यहाँ participation ही तो असली point है।

Submission: wheel (या chain), leader के through एक official route entry को controlled और accountable रखता है।

Real organisations बिल्कुल इसी तरह हर task के हिसाब से shape switch करती हैं; कोई एक single best network नहीं होता, बस best fit होता है।

All-channel हर member को हर दूसरे member से जोड़ता है, इसलिए flow में structurally कोई senior नहीं होता। Wheel सबसे कम equal है (सब कुछ एक hub के पास), chain लोगों को line में position के हिसाब से rank करता है, और Y में flow junction वाले person पर concentrate हो जाता है।

"explain communication networks" के लिए: पहले term define कीजिए, फिर कम से कम 3 networks present कीजिए (chain, wheel, और circle/all-channel में से एक), हर एक का shape बनाकर या describe करके, एक advantage और एक limitation के साथ। आखिर में ये note कीजिए कि organisations इन्हें combine करती हैं: formal decisions wheel या chain पर चलते हैं, teamwork circle या all-channel पर।

कोई भी network हर जगह नहीं जीतता: speed, accuracy, control और satisfaction एक-दूसरे के खिलाफ खींचते हैं। अगर आपके answer में किसी एक network को "the best" का ताज पहना दिया, तो point भी गया और marks भी गए। हमेशा हर network को उस situation से जोड़िए जो उसे suit करती है: orders के लिए hierarchy, speed के लिए hub, ideas के लिए mesh।
