Communication एक cycle है: एक idea encode होता है, channel से travel करता है, decode होता है, और feedback बनकर वापस आता है, और noise कहीं भी आकर गड़बड़ कर सकता है।

The two-letter disaster

एक दोस्त का लंबा सा message आता है और आप reply करते हो: "ok."

10 second बाद जवाब आता है: "Why are you angry with me??"

अब आप angry थे ही नहीं। आप तो बस खाना खा रहे थे। लेकिन आपके शांत से "ok." और उसके hurt reaction के बीच कहीं communication टूट गया। यही topic आपको वो map देता है जिससे आप exactly पता लगा सकते हो कि कहाँ टूटा, और यही map exam में guaranteed question है।

A message is a traveller

अपने message को एक traveller समझो जो आपके mind से आपके दोस्त के mind तक जा रहा है। पहले वो words में pack होता है (encoding), फिर किसी transport से travel करता है (channel), दूसरी तरफ जाकर unpack होता है (decoding), और वापसी में एक reply postcard आता है (feedback)। रास्ते में कहीं भी traffic आकर पूरे सफर को गड़बड़ कर सकती है। वही traffic noise है।

The chain, step by step

हर communication इसी chain से गुजरती है:

1. Idea: sender के mind में एक thought बनता है

2. Encoding: वो idea words, gestures या symbols में बदल जाता है

3. Message: जो content pack हुआ, वो खुद

4. Channel: जिस रास्ते से travel करता है (speech, phone, email, notice board)

5. Decoding: receiver उन symbols को वापस meaning में बदलता है

6. Understanding: receiver ने actually क्या समझा

7. Feedback: receiver का response, जिससे loop पूरा होता है

Noise कोई step नहीं है। ये एक raider है जो किसी भी step पर हमला कर सकता है।

Where "ok." went wrong

अब उस disaster को इसी chain में चलाकर देखो। आपका idea था शांत सी agreement। आपने उसे encode किया 2 letters और एक full stop में। Channel ने उसे perfectly deliver भी कर दिया। लेकिन आपके दोस्त ने "ok." को अपने खुद के rulebook से decode किया, जिसमें short reply plus full stop का मतलब होता है ठंडापन, नाराज़गी।

Encoding और decoding ही तो पूरे process का दिल हैं: sender और receiver दोनों के पास same rulebook of symbols होना चाहिए, वरना words perfectly पहुँचने के बावजूद रास्ते में meaning बदल जाता है।

Decoding

मिले हुए symbols को वापस meaning में बदलना decoding है। Encoding तो आपकी तरफ हुआ था जब आपने type किया। और उसका जो गुस्से वाला "Why are you angry??" बाद में आया, वो feedback है।

Blackboard (एक visual channel), साथ में teacher की आवाज़ (एक oral channel)। ज़्यादातर classroom communication में एक साथ 2 channels use होते हैं, और इसीलिए diagram plus explanation, दोनों में से किसी एक अकेले से बेहतर पढ़ाता है।

Noise: the three raiders

Noise वो हर चीज़ है जो message को distort या block करती है:

  • Physical noise: असली sound या channel की problem, class के बाहर का traffic, phone का signal टूटना
  • Psychological noise: receiver का mood या bias, एक stressed student neutral words में भी criticism सुन लेता है
  • Semantic noise: symbols खुद fail हो जाते हैं, जैसे professor ऐसा jargon use करे जो first-years ने कभी सुना ही नहीं

Feedback आपका noise detector है: अगर reply गलत सा लगे, तो समझ जाओ कि chain में कहीं noise ने हमला किया है।

Semantic noise

Channel तो clear था, सबको सुनाई भी दे रहा था, लेकिन symbols खुद receivers तक meaning नहीं पहुँचा पाए। यही semantic noise है। Physical होता असली आवाज़ का, और psychological होता mood या prejudice का बीच में आना।

Draw करो: Sender → Encoding → Message → Channel → Decoding → Receiver → Feedback (arrow वापस sender की तरफ), और channel के आसपास Noise लिखो। हर box को label करो, फिर हर एक को 2 से 3 lines में explain करो। यही diagram plus "ये line नहीं, cycle है" वाला point, "explain the process of communication" का full-marks answer है।

Watch out

The four steps students forget

कमज़ोर answers में students सिर्फ sender, message, channel, receiver लिख देते हैं। असली marks तो बाकी 4 में हैं: encoding, decoding, feedback और noise। और इसे हमेशा cycle कहना, one-way line नहीं। Feedback ही तो इसे cycle बनाता है।
