Business Application of Matrices

Business data ને matrix તરીકે લખો (rows એટલે જગ્યાઓ, columns એટલે products), પછી total, growth, revenue અને price change બધું એક એક matrix operation બની જાય છે.

Theory

Rupa નો એક નજરમાં થઈ જતો report

Rupa (પેલા multiplication વાળા topic માંથી) હવે એના Campus અને Station counter માટે એક monthly report બનાવવા માંગે છે: બંનેનું combined sales, growth, દરેક counter નું revenue, અને price વધે તો શું થાય એ બધું.

એની હરીફ 4 પાના ભરીને છૂટોછવાયો હિસાબ કરે છે. Rupa તો 2 grid લખે છે અને 4 નાની operations, બસ.

ખરેખર તો તમે તમારી રોજની જિંદગી આ જ idea પર ચલાવો છો: તમે અત્યાર સુધી વાપરેલી દરેક Excel sheet એ office ના કપડાં પહેરેલી એક matrix જ છે.

Rows એટલે વસ્તુઓ, columns એટલે facts

દરેક business grid એક જ નિયમ પાળે છે: rows એટલે તમે જેની સરખામણી કરો છો એ વસ્તુઓ (branches, counters, months) અને columns એટલે એમના વિશેની facts (items sold, costs, marks). આ shape એક વાર નક્કી કરો પછી એ જ રાખો. જે ઘડીએ 2 reports એક row નો મતલબ શું છે એ બાબતે અલગ પડે, એ પછીની બધી calculation ચૂપચાપ ખોટી પડવા લાગશે.

ઉદાહરણ કરી બતાવીએ: February નું revenue

February નું sales S અને prices P (samosa ₹9, tea ₹7):

S = ⎡ 12 9 ⎤ P = ⎡ 9 ⎤

Inner numbers મળે છે (2 = 2), એટલે answer 2×1 નું આવશે:

Campus: 12·9 + 9·7 = 108 + 63 = 171

Station: 10·9 + 14·7 = 90 + 98 = 188

S·P = ⎡ 171 ⎤

એને એક manager ની જેમ વાંચો: Station counter વધારે કમાય છે, અને એ મોટે ભાગે tea ના volume ને લીધે.

સૌથી મોટી cell 3 છે, row 1, column 2 પર: એટલે Campus counter એ January કરતાં 3 (100) tea વધારે વેચી. Matrix નો જવાબ ત્યાં સુધી પૂરો ના ગણાય જ્યાં સુધી તમે એને એવા વાક્યમાં ના કહી શકો કે જે સાંભળીને દુકાનદાર માથું હલાવીને હા પાડે.

4×1 નું price column

Revenue માટે દરેક item નો એક price જોઈએ, અને inner numbers મળવા જોઈએ: (3×4)·(4×1) ચાલે અને 3×1 column આપે, એટલે દરેક shop નો એક total. Option B inner check માં ફેલ થાય: (3×4)·(1×3) માં 4 સામે 1 આવે. Option C અને D માં તો price છે જ નહીં, એટલે એ revenue આપી જ ના શકે.

દરેક month ને price column સાથે multiply કરો, પછી subtract કરો

"કમાયું" એટલે revenue, એટલે પહેલા દરેક month ને price આપો (2 વાર S·P), પછી revenue columns ને subtract કરો: (171-132, 188-156) = (39, 32). Add કરવાથી તો total મળે, growth નહીં; અને 2 sales grid ને multiply કરવાનો અહીં કોઈ business અર્થ જ નથી, કારણ કે એમના columns items છે, prices નહીં.

Watch out

Business matrices માં ક્યાં ભૂલ પડે છે

Multiplication નો order: S·P ચાલે, પણ P·S એ (2×1)·(2×2) થાય, inner numbers 1 ≠ 2, એટલે defined જ નથી. પહેલા sales grid, પછી price column.

Shape drift: જો February માં એક નવું item ઉમેરાય, તો 2×2 ને 2×3 સાથે add ના થાય. Add કરતાં પહેલા બંને month ને એક જ shape માં ફરી ગોઠવો (ખૂટતા item માટે 0 મૂકી દો).

આ ખરેખરની industry pattern છે

Excel નું SUMPRODUCT એટલે એક row ને column માં ગુણવું, બસ એ જ. Inventory systems, GST billing software અને banking ledgers, બધા quantity અને rate ના tables store કરે છે અને Rupa ની જેમ જ multiply કરે છે. Economists તો input-output matrices થી આખા આખા દેશ ને model કરે છે. Semester 3 માં તમે graphs ને adjacency matrices તરીકે store કરશો: એ જ grid, નવા કપડાં.
