Rupa की एक-नज़र वाली report
Rupa (वही multiplication वाले topic से) अब अपने Campus और Station counters का monthly report चाहती है: दोनों की मिलाकर sales, growth, हर counter का revenue, और अगर prices बढ़ जाएँ तो क्या होगा।
उसका competitor 4 पन्नों पर बिखरा हुआ हिसाब लिखता रहता है। Rupa सिर्फ 2 grids बनाती है और 4 छोटे operations कर देती है।
सच कहूँ तो आप भी अपनी ज़िंदगी इसी idea पर चला रहे हैं: आपने आज तक जितनी भी Excel sheet इस्तेमाल की है, वो असल में एक matrix ही है, बस office के कपड़े पहनकर बैठी है।

Rows मतलब चीज़ें, columns मतलब उनके facts
हर business grid एक ही convention follow करती है: rows वो चीज़ें होती हैं जिनकी आप तुलना कर रहे हैं (branches, counters, months) और columns उनके बारे में facts होते हैं (कितने items बिके, costs, marks)। यह shape एक बार fix कर लीजिए और वैसा ही रखिए। जिस पल 2 reports में row का मतलब अलग-अलग हो गया, उसके बाद का हर calculation चुपचाप झूठ बोलने लगेगा।

Worked example: February का revenue
February की sales S और prices P (samosa ₹9, tea ₹7):

Inner numbers match हो रहे हैं (2 = 2), तो answer 2×1 का आएगा:
Campus: 12·9 + 9·7 = 108 + 63 = 171
Station: 10·9 + 14·7 = 90 + 98 = 188

अब इसे एक manager की तरह पढ़िए: Station counter ज़्यादा कमा रहा है, और वो भी ज़्यादातर tea की volume की वजह से।

सबसे बड़ा cell है 3, row 1, column 2 पर: मतलब Campus counter ने January से 3 (100) tea ज़्यादा बेचीं। याद रखिए, matrix का answer तब तक पूरा नहीं होता जब तक आप उसे एक ऐसे sentence में न बता सकें जिस पर एक दुकानदार सिर हिलाकर हामी भर दे।

एक 4×1 price column से
Revenue के लिए हर item का एक price चाहिए, और inner numbers match होने चाहिए: (3×4)·(4×1) चलता है और 3×1 column देता है, यानी हर shop का एक total। Option B inner check में fail हो जाता है: (3×4)·(1×3) में 4 के सामने 1 आ जाता है। Option C और D में कोई price है ही नहीं, इसलिए वो revenue नहीं दे सकते।

"कमाया" मतलब revenue, तो पहले हर महीने को price दीजिए (S·P 2 बार), फिर revenue columns को subtract कीजिए: (171-132, 188-156) = (39, 32)। जोड़ने से totals मिलेंगे, growth नहीं, और 2 sales grids को multiply करने का यहाँ कोई business मतलब ही नहीं बनता: उनके columns items हैं, prices नहीं।
Watch out
Business matrices में कहाँ गड़बड़ होती है
Multiplication का order: S·P चलता है, लेकिन P·S तो (2×1)·(2×2) है, inner numbers 1 ≠ 2, यानी defined ही नहीं। तो पहले sales grid, फिर price column।
Shape drift: अगर February में कोई नया item जुड़ जाए, तो 2×2 को 2×3 के साथ जोड़ा नहीं जा सकता। जोड़ने से पहले दोनों महीनों को एक ही shape में बना लीजिए (missing item की जगह 0 भर दीजिए)।

यह industry का असली pattern है
Excel का SUMPRODUCT असल में एक row को एक column में multiply करना ही है। Inventory systems, GST billing software और banking ledgers, सब quantity और rate की tables store करते हैं और बिल्कुल Rupa की तरह उन्हें multiply करते हैं। Economists तो पूरे देशों को input-output matrices से model करते हैं। Semester 3 में आप graphs को adjacency matrices की तरह store करेंगे: वही grid, बस नया costume।
